What's a good excuse that warrants coming late to work?

My husband was running late to work today and I told him that it's okay to be late today because of the weather. It's snowing and windy here in NYC. A fourth nor'easter this month. He seemed to get upset by what I said and told me that the weather is no excuse to be late to work. Get out earlier if the weather is bad. That's good advice. So, why didn't he follow it himself? Why didn't he make sure to leave the house so he wouldn't have to rush to get to work, especially in this bad weather? And if I heard him correctly, he also told me there is no excuse for being late, period. Really? Sometimes, thing happen unexpectedly that we have to take care of, which cause us to be late. Or sometimes things happen beyond our control that cause us to be late, even if we leave for work with enough time to get there. Things like road closures, car accidents, transportation delays, etc. You can't say there is no excuse for coming late to work, especially if the weather conditions are bad. You can't get penalized for being late because of bad weather. Or can you? We shouldn't come in late to work but, if it happens, what do you think is a good excuse that warrants coming late to work?

But what if you leave earlier and there is bumper to bumper traffic and you are stuck in it? Some things you just can't control.

@thislittlepennyearns Not always. Recently, there was an incident in NYC near World Trade Center where a motorist ran down people. Next day, because of what officials were doing, there were major delays getting into Manhttan. People traveling through the tunnel into Manhattan spent about 1.5 hours stuck in the tunnel trying to get through. Couldn't have predicted that.

@lovebuglena there's not gonna be traffic everyday. I can't stand people who are late. It's disrespectful. I'm always early to work..you can always plan for traffic.

Better to show up late than not at all, especially in bad weather. Never put your own life at risk to please the boss. :-/

Being late on a regular basis is not good at all. But if a person is late once in a while that shouldn't be an issue. About your last line... wonder if every boss would agree.

@lovebuglena probably not. He would replace you in an instant which tells you where HIS loyalty is. :-)

Maybe the boss would say to take more than a day off just in case.

You can make all the allowances you like to try to get to work on time by leaving early etc but occasionally things beyond your control will cause you to be late.

I agree with him on the weather being no excuse, as you should leave earlier than normal. But if you woke up to the weather bad like that, unexpectedly then thats different in my opinion. As you probably dont have much extra time to leave early. Kids waking up sick, or pets being sick and having to deal with them, alarm not going off.. many good excuses. Some just dont care either way.

I remember I worked in a company where the president would walk around the floor to make sure that at exactly 9 am everyone was in their cubicles working. For him, there was no excuse for being late. There was one person that used to come in late often. He wasn't fired but he had money deducted from his paycheck for being late.

But in bad weather, sometimes you can leave the house earlier than usual and still be late to work. Or leave for work on time but there are transportation delays, which cause you to be late, even if the weather is not bad.
