news we didn't need

We found out yesterday that the stepkids are coming to live here tomorrow indefinitely. Their mother got evicted from where they were staying (and I think there's quite a bit more to the story than she told us) and is going to be homeless for a while.
I'm a bit stressed out and unprepared. This is going to be hard on them. This is going to be hard on us. They're enrolled in school in an entirely different county an hour away. I don't know how quickly we can get to court to get the child support payments stopped and physical custody officially changed, and I'm pretty sure she thinks this is just an "oops, this is just temporary, somebody will save me" situation.
I don't know what to hope for. I'm just tired of her being irresponsible. I'm glad we have a place for the kids, even if it's going to be tight.

Oh my goodness! I can't imagine what's going on in your head!
I am so glad you have a roof for them to be under, and it might be good for the kids.. if they get along, but boy the stress and all the extra food and stuff you'll probably need.. Goodluck!!

@spiderdust my brother and i hardly ever fought. But then we were 11 days short of a year apart and were close..

They get along as well as any siblings do, which means sometimes they get along great and sometimes they bicker like the dickens.

I do too. What's not going to make for a smooth transition is the 12 year old is still grounded from electronics due to his behavior when he was last here, and he still thinks I'm a mean b!7@# that he doesn't have to listen to... so that's not going to be fun.

It is a huge task. But what else can I do? They need to be cared for, and their mom dropped the ball badly.

I'm so sorry you're all in this predicament. How does one become homeless when they receive child support to keep a roof over their kids' head? Sounds like the kids may be better off with you, even if it will be stressful for all involved. Definitely make sure the child support payments are stopped and custody is changed, she shouldn't be able to receive benefits meant to take care of the children if she's not actually taking care of them!

My stepkids? Because their mother is homeless and they share custody, and we'd rather they not be homeless too.

@spiderdust It can be hard to want to help someone whose burned a lot of bridges. But it's definitely not fair to let the kids suffer and be homeless.

Yes, we will never let the kids be homeless. Their mom, on the other hand... she's burned a lot of bridges.

The girl just got a lead role in her school's musical, and now this. It's not going to be easy, but we're going to get her to as many rehearsals as possible, even though that school is an hour away. We have a decent public transit system, but I really hate the idea of a teenage girl on public transit at night.

@spiderdust especially with the way the world is now. Ive got my fingers crossed that everything about the transition goes as smoothly as possible. Ill get a care package together in the next week or so and send it out to yall. Its the least I can do.
