I watched an old 1934 movie, The Scarlet Empress, last night. It had Marlene Dietrich and a fellow who played Peter III of Russia. I think was a very young Sam Jaffe. Yes, it was him. It was about Catherine the Great who married Peter III of Russin in the 1700's. I thought it was a farce type of movie and today I did some research on it. It is advertised as a "visual splendor verging of madness". The film critic, Robin Wood, says the atmosphere is like a nightmare. (It really was.) Grotesque gargoyles and huge doors all throughout. A good job was done in showing Russia as in real need of reform.

Yes, I have seen (well, partly seen) this movie. I'm afraid I was bored about a third of the way through it and shut it off.

@DaddyEvil .....I don't pay much attention the reviews. I used to. But, I have found that, down through the years, many movies are good whether the critics think it is or not.

@celticeagle I used to prefer going to see the movie without hearing/seeing any of the reviews so I wasn't influenced in the way I saw/understood it... This wasn't the first nor the last in a series of... lackluster movies (in my opinion) that I watched (or partially watched) before I started checking every review I could find before bothering to see a movie.

Don´t know if I have ever seen that Film ever. If its about Catherine the Great then it has to be good. Just been watching a part of it and she Marlene I mean is very good. Going offline now as its really late good film though worth watching when I have time.
