Yes, I am a Filipino but Australian citizen .. I came to Australia in 1983 and was naturalised in 1984.. Just to answer a few who asked if I was a Filipino.. So, that's the face with dark skin and flat nose.. lol.. I was called "the ugly one" when I was little which traumatised me for years and wished my nose was a little bit pointy.. Because over there, your good opportunities in life depends on your looks ..
.. But you know, I got over it... but it took years ..LOL
.. such is life hey?..
I guess, after 35 years living in Australia, I learned to embrace the multiculture of Australia.. Having worked as a self-employed here 25 years, I had more personal encounters with so many different people from many countries. From all walks of life and they all made me feel great about myself..They inspired me to do better.. They supported my business and advertised for me.. I was exposed to their culture and traditions.. And I loved the experience.. Here in Australia, once I have proven than I am good in what I do, my flat nose didn't matter anymore ..
.. I have never experienced here in Australia the most painful belittling and discrimination that I have experienced in my own country of birth and from my own people. But I have put it all behind now..
I flourished here in Australia despite all the difficulties I experienced in my first marriage and the hardship of becoming a single mother by choice.. My boys and I thrived and became decent, productive members of our community.. I owe everything to Australia .. I am grateful to this country..I love this country..
One thing I learned from living here in Australia is that no matter where we came from, no matter what our beliefs are, our upbringing , our status in life, our achievements, our race, our skin colour, our languages , our nationalities, our citizenships, our possessions, how much money we have, our education , whether we have traveled far and wide or not, we are all the same deep inside..
Our level of happiness, contentment and satisfaction in life may not be the same, but our insecurities, worries , sense of loss and sadness are all the same..Those are the equalisers.. And each one of us human beings has only one very important need.. Validation of our existence..
But no one has ever told us in our younger life that only the SELF can validate self...
Thank you for reading

this answered my question that I replied from your comment. It is good that you were able to rise and prove people here and there that you are worth it. Crab mentality is always a problem here, not all people want to see you grow and bloom whilst in other countries, of course they have also this discrimination. I am glad you were over it and now successful in your right.

It is a difficult job to free self from that "crab mentality" that stagnates .... But it can be done if we really want it...

Inspiring, Bess. I wish people, most especially here in the Philippines, would not only look at the exterior of a person, because in reality, if people find you cute, pretty, white skinned they will talk to you and be kind to you, while those who are not, will just be passed by or rejected. That is the kind of mentality we have here even if the person is smart or good at work. We forget that there is more than the outer beauty. Many people are superficial too and those are the kind of people I do not like to mingle with. That is the reason why I told a friend from another country that most of my countrymen will not accept you or even make fun of you just because you don't fit their beauty standard, unlike other countries who will embrace you for your uniqueness and your beauty as long as you be yourself and show them that you are more than your physical attributes. I know, I have Filipino friends who are living in other countries and they are having the best times of their lives and being themselves.

@mlgen1037 I agree... I don't think there should be any trendy or fashionable way to look... It should be all looks ... Everyone is fine the way they are

I find the skin color thing confusing. Can't believe there is such discrimination. Here you don't want to look too light. Many go to tanning bed to look darker

@FayeHazel I was told about that before. Why are we into whitening products when others like our skin color. That is also what I am baffled about. Why cant we just accept the colors we were given with. People are just really making things complicated.

I salute you for soaring in a foreign country. Indeed here, if you are gaining a higher level of life some people will be jealous and pull you down.
Leave those bad memories of childhood behind and continue enjoying your life now in AUstralia.

Oh thanks! It’s very kind of you.. Now that I’m old an grey, really doesn’t worry me what others think of me.. lol.. But I also realised that some people who are not happy with their looks, are the ones who pick on other people’s looks..lol..

@epiffanie I think the grey actually suits you quite well. YOu look elegant and exotic. :-)
But yes, you are 100% right. Those who pick on others appearances are unhappy with their own.

I don't understand why people discriminate others. I just hate the idea of it

In the Filipino culture, discrimination is like an epidemic ... And if you happen to be born in poverty, you are already a victim even before you are born ..

It's a sad fact but true that a certain kind of racism exists in our country, a racism that is not much rooted on slavery but a kind that has origins in colonialism or colonial mentality, it's the reason why people with fairer skin, tall and having Caucasian features speaks English or Spanish are always thought of as hansome and beatifiul, landed and better educated, it's been passively going on for centuries.
I am very glad you got over it and doing well now in the country that gave you opportunity, I am very happy for you and best luck.

It definitely is different now here in Australia than in the early 80s when I first arrived here.. But I guess because of the newcomers, we are experiencing adjustments ..

It is so sad to know you had bad experiences here in our country. It is so ironical that you get that needed morale-booster from a foreign country, a very nice one at that. Just enjoy life!

Yes! .. and most of the painful experiences I had when I was a child was the belittling I endured from some of my teachers .. And a couple of them were my father's cousins ... It took me years to get over the pain ...
