The inspiration for my next YouTube video

The little girl in the photo is the inspiration behind my next music video on YouTube. As some of you know, I like to record music and put it on YouTube. Vanny and DJ, from MyLot, are con-conspirators in this effort. The girl in the photo has known me since she was "in her mommy's tummy." Her older sister was my student at my friend's preschool a few years ago. I adore my newer friend's "resting sad face," and I adore our conversations, now that she's 4 1/2. She is natural leader, and will spontaneously lead the other kids in songs like Take Me Out to the Ballgame, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and The Pirate Song. Of course, I encourage her and sing along with her. She's been playing my mandolin since she was two. About two weeks ago, she came in singing "I gave my love a cherry," but couldn't remember all of the words. I started singing along with her, but couldn't remember all of the words either. She doesn't know it, but I remember parts of this song from when I was her age. I actually researched it, and am recording it at my friend's garage studio. It's called The Riddle Song and has been around for a long time, perhaps generations. The author? My favorite! "Trad." Have you ever heard this song? Have you ever gotten inspiration from an unusual source?

My music, as my Pink Flamingoes on iTunes will attest is not only strange, but inspired by my own internal angst and woes. Music has its way like that. I like what you do. It's why I do what I do. Not to hit the masses. But to express what I feel, and who I am...and the beauty is that there are people who connect with that around the world.

She may be a child prodigy. Would she be part of your music video?

No, I thought of using a picture of her, but I'm going entirely with nature shots and a handful of others. Ironically, no cute kids in a kid video.

I have heard the song, if I remember well the singer was Joan Baez. This little girl has a beautiful face.

@LadyDuck Was it a better version than the one I found? I think the version I heard in childhood days was by a male, maybe Burl Ives.

I did check to see if Joan Baez recorded it, but all I could find was a very early recording, casually played and sung, on an out of tune guitar.

Let's see what I remember... "I gave my love a cherry, that had no stone. I gave my love a chicken, that had no bone. I gave my love a ring, that had no end." (Um...) "How can there be a cherry, that has no stone? How can there be a chicken, that has no bone? How can there be a ring, that has no end?" (Um...) Then it describes each in a way I can't remember lyrically. But a cherry has no stone when it is a cherry blossom. The chicken has no bone when it is an egg. And the ring has no end when it is rolling. I just can't remember the fourth line at all. In Animal House, someone started singing this, and the one guy flipped and smashed the instrument.

Heh. I hope this doesn't happen to my video when it comes out! I have the third "thing" as "I gave my love a story/ that has no end" and the fourth as "I gave my love a baby/with no crying. I have a beautiful photo of one of my best friends sleeping for "A baby when she's sleeping/has no crying" (she's 4 1/2) but chose not to use it. No "cute kids" in this kids video.

I can't remember who sang it when I was little. I assume my dad did. But it may have come from a Burl Ives record, or something like that.

She's a lovely child. Sometimes I'm inspired by what I see or what I've experienced.

"I gave my love a cherry without a stone I gave my love a chicken without a bone I told my love a story that had no end I gave my love a baby with no crying..." I grew up hearing this song on one of my parents' Joan Baez albums.
