Scary News about Airlines

It seems as if every day brings a new, scary story about the airline industry. On "60 Minutes" last Sunday evening, they did a feature story on how the maintenance was so bad on Allegiant jets that sometimes they have had 4 or 5 different emergency incidents on the same day. This morning I heard that Sun Airlines simply abandoned about 200 people in Mexico and, essentially, told them "Good luck, find you own flight home." Then, this afternoon, a Southwest Airlines jet blew up, broke a window on the plane and killed one of the passengers. Afterwards, the surviving passengers experienced a terrifying emergency landing. My husband and I fly somewhere two or three times a year. I've never worried about flying. However, all these events are certainly troubling.

Yes, rhat is somehow troubling. Why does these airline companies busy with getting money out of its customer but not fix the problems for a safer experience?

@mlgen1037 - I agree they need to concentrate on making their planes safer.

@mlgen1037 - I agree. Safety and a good customer experience are the most important aspects of flying.

@DeborahDiane that should be and then the customer experience must be their main priority.

Those incidents are very worrying. There are very few positive outcomes when planes come down unexpectedly. I guess it's a good idea to stick with the big airlines. I think I've heard of Sun Airlines but not the others.

@JudyEv - I agree. When you are up in the air, it is not like you can pull to the side of the road if there is a problem. They need to check and double-check everything!

@DeborahDiane There is no way airline operators can afford to get blase about their planes.

I have never been worried flying, we take a lot more risk sitting in a car every day.

@DeborahDiane Not even an elevator is 100% safe. The most dangerous mean of travel is the Motorcycle ( 4.840 deaths per million hours of motorcycling). The safest Bus Travel (.011 deaths per million hours of travel). Incredible, but true.

@DeborahDiane I do not like the bus a lot, but for short distance I use the bus here. I would never ride a motorcycle.

@LadyDuck - Yes, I have always heard it more dangerous to drive than fly. I guess we have to realize that there is some risk, no matter how we decide to travel. No transportation is completely safe.

We just got back last week from that trip to Texas last week. We flew from here through Denver to San Antonio and back. The flights were okay and on time but that 737 is soo uncomfortable in the middle seat. The guy next to me from Denver was sick, three days later, I was too.

@DeborahDiane What a great idea! I am not all anxious to fly again though.

@JamesHxstatic - I'm glad you like our idea. If you do have to fly, I hope you and Anne will consider splitting up the way we do. The added benefit is that occasionally, if the flight is not full, there is no one at all sitting between us, because people tend to buy the middle seat the last!

@JamesHxstatic - My husband and I always avoid the middle seat. He takes the window and I take the aisle. Then we pray that someone skinny gets the middle seat. Whatever happens, we at least have some space where we can lean away from the middle. It makes things a little more comfortable. When people realize we are together, they always offer to trade seats with us, but we always decline. For a few hours, we can sit apart!

I learned about a helicopter crash here this morning. It's one of the medical helicopters.

@just4him - That was a terrible accident. I heard about it here in California, too. The helicopter had just dropped off a patient before it crashed. The pilot and medical personnel were all killed. It was so sad. I think sometimes that we have gotten too casual about flying. We have forgotten how dangerous it can be.

@petatonicsca - There is no way for us to see some of our family without flying, either. This was a bad week for the airlines, though.

What is going on? Industrialists becoming so inhumane? I just mentioned in another response that in India also we had about 150 midair engine failures and about 45 air-crafts were grounded! I had apprehension about my flight to my home city and I have posted about it few weeks back! Now it seems God only can save us fron there Airline people! Thanks!

@AKRao24 - I agree. The people we need to be saved from are the industrialists and the airline people!

@DeborahDiane , They are actually playing with the lives of people and making money out of it! I really wonder how can they take such things so lightly? Thanks!

If I owned an airline (which will never happen of course), I'd want for every jet that I owned to be in tip top shape because if one of the jets crashed and killed people because of lack of good maintenance, I wouldn't be able to live with myself.

@MainerMikeBrown - I agree with you completely. That is one of the disadvantages of having a privatized transportation system. Making a profit has to come above all other considerations.

Gee, thanks a lot Deborah. My daughter, granddaughter and I are flying next month. I don't get scared when I fly, but my granddaughter (28) has a real fear of flying. Sure hope she didn't see that report on 60 Minutes!

I'm very happy I don't go flying a lot. I never had a problem on the actual plane, it all happens before or after. Ugh, the anxiety I have while on a plane is through the roof and it is because of stories like these
