We're going to break the law

We are taking our bus/motorhome to a music festival this weekend and will be camping, along with many others, for three nights. We are not supposed to take our own alcohol onto the site. Even when we are on site, we can only buy and drink alcohol in certain areas. Many people like to have a drink with their friends on the campsite before retiring for the night or whatever. If you are young and drive a panel van, the security guys are likely to stop you at the ticketing area and perhaps search your vehicle for alcohol. However with oldies like us I think they believe we are law-abiding citizens and we haven’t been stopped yet. We do have our bottles a little bit hidden in case they decide to search our vehicle. We do buy alcohol in the licensed area but even there our bizarre laws require us to leave behind any alcohol we haven’t consumed. So if you buy a bottle and only drink half of it you are expected to leave it behind. What’s more they keep the bottle-top (most Australian wines now have a screw top rather than a cork) so you can’t easily smuggle out any part bottles. But we weren’t born yesterday as the saying goes. We take a couple screw tops with us in our backpack. If we haven’t finished a bottle we put the top on, place it in our backpack and chat to the security man as we leave the area. We’ve already made a friend of him on the way in. I like to think I’m law-abiding but I have no trouble breaking the law when it is such a stupid one. Do you rigidly abide by all laws?

I try to obey laws as long as they keep me safe and sound.

Normally we are very law-abiding but our drinking laws really are ridiculous.

@JudyEv I agree with you since some laws treat us like the lawmakers treats us like we are their children.

That is a rather strange law.

It's really silly. It's okay (by law) to scoff your drink quickly in the licensed area but that is really stupid behaviour.

Hope you do not meet a new security man on your way out.( one who had'' law abiding ''grand parents like you and is wise to such tricks). Some laws beg to be broken.Hope you enjoy your camping trip.

I have never seen a lady lawbreaker of this kind! Take me as a hitchhiker in your bus. I love music and a few sips now and then!

We have picked up hitch-hikers in the bus and once we had a hitch-hiker in the car and his bike down the middle of a pop-up caravan.

I guess, I am a nervous lady, so I always abide by the law and that also goes with my husband. It's better to be safe than sorry.

If you are nervous about getting caught, you would look so guilty they would have no trouble picking you out! It is good that you are law-abiding.

I usually do, if I know about them. I hope you escape the wrath of the law. Are you sure this site is secure enough to be revealing what you plan to do ahead of time?

@judyev The great thing about accumulating so many birthdays is that young policemen and the like treat you like their own grandparents and would never suspect you of any nefarious activities. Make the most of it.

@JudyEv But we can pretend to be deaf, short-sighted and with dodgy bladder control - that scares them.

I'll do just that. I must admit it's a bit embarrassing to be told off by someone young enough to be my granchild.

That one does seem a bit harsh. I'm afraid I'm pretty law-abiding. But then I don't drink so would have no problem with that law.

Good luck. We forgot we had strawberries in the fridge of our rented camper van. When we got off the ferry in Tasmania, they found them and just really screamed at us. So, it seems to me that they are really strict in Australia.

Thanks for the reminder! I know we can't bring stuff back across the Nullarbor but I didn't know you couldn't bring it back from Tassie. Definitely something to remember as we're going there in June with the caravan so we're bound to have food on board.

I'm not sure its a "law" but I do sneak in my own drinks and snacks! One time I never finished my dinner before the show so I got a Togo box. I gotta say the garlic bread, salad, etc was delicious during a long movie!

I would be doing that too. I wouldn't if they didn't charge such outlandish prices for snacks in these places.

The benefit of age is that there will be no security check for you. A blessing in disguise really. Make hay while the sun shines but you said it is raining there (lol) I break laws if I think they are silly.

If you don't want to leave it behind, you have to drink it so in a way they are forcing you to binge drink which is very undesirable.

That does seem like a dumb law. It would be difficult for me to abide that one as well. As for laws in general, I generally abide by them. But sometimes you just have to say no.
