We recently got 2 new puppies, they are both blue German shepherds. The photo is of mine, her name is T'Kira my roommates pup, also female is named Brittha Blue German shepherds are made from a recessive color gene- both parents have to have a copy for the pups to be born with this dilute color... there were 4 in our pups litter of 10. So consequently this is a fairly rare color. they can be solid blue or like we have blue and tan, you can also have blue sables and I discovered in my research that there are other rare colors... Liver , and what they call a Panda Sheherd. They are carriers of a mutated gene that passes on patches of randomly placed white patches.. it looks totally different. All Panda Shepherds can be traced back to one dog - a female that carried the gene. Maybe I will think of getting one of these next time... but for now I will enjoy our Blue girls

I have seen dogs that color, I didn't know they were considered to be blue. I like white German Shepherds..they are so distinctive.

Yes. they are the same and can be registered.. the only difference is in coat color.. it is a recessive gene.. and AKC considers that a fault if you wanted to show the dog... but I think they are great for people that love something a little different than everybody else.. I am happy with a pet and not a show dog.

@minx267 We had a corgi and one of her ears never stood up which would have been a disqualification if she had been a show dog. .

Yes it's nice to have something different at times I hope there are no negative genetic defects that would come out. Do they breed dogs that are closely related in order to make recessive genes they carry come out in the outer appearance or phenotype?

I'm sure some do do that. These breeders had no idea the blue recessive gene was in there they were surprised. The blue coloring only affects the color so no other defects genetically are linked to it.

I have never heard of this type of German Shepard, but they are beautiful. I love the "blue" lines of dogs. They are just a unique color and they look so cute.
