Thrift Stores - Big Business

I took a nap as I was falling asleep on the computer this morning. I planned to go to the thrift store today to replenish my dwindling wardrobe. Now, mind you, I haven't been to a thrift store in many years. Most of my shopping has been done at Wal-Mart. However, with my income also dwindling lately, I thought I would give the thrift store a try and see what I could come away with. What I found surprised me. Green Bay has two larger thrift stores. I'm sure there are a few more but the ones everyone gravitates to are one or both of the ones I visited today. Besides, I don't know where the others are. What I found at both left me in shock. Now, remember, I said I haven't been to one in a number of years, and somehow, just like your cousins, nieces, and nephews you haven't seen in a long time, you remember them as much younger, and reality tends to slap you in the face when you meet after a long time. They aren't young, and the prices in the thrift shops aren't low either. When I buy clothes at Wal-Mart, I buy them when they're on sale, and those sales are very good. What I found at the thrift stores showed me it would be in my best interests to buy new. The prices are similar, and I would be able to find what I'm looking for in my size. Another thing I couldn't find at either store. So, as I give away my wardrobe this weekend at church for the church rummage give away - yes, people will be able to find clothes for free, I will be looking for my clothes, not at the church give away, because I'm not free for those few hours next Saturday to do any shopping at church, but I will look for new pants at Wal-Mart. I might even go over to TJ Maxx to see what they have, since they also have a reputation for low prices. So, today, I saved a lot of money, since I didn't spend any. At least not on clothes. I did go shopping at Wal-Mart this morning after the Y as I needed water, avocados and paper. I'm almost out of printer paper. I usually buy by the case, and figured I would only buy a couple reams. Wal-Mart has it by the case. I bought a case. I needed more paper because I need to print up my manuscript and give it to my friend to proof as soon as I have this edit finished, and I only have five chapters to go and it will be finished. Thrift stores are big business. You can pay almost as much for clothes there as you can at a regular discount store. That's where I'll be doing my shopping. And I'll know they have my size. It's good to know I'm losing weight enough to look for smaller size clothes. It's another finding them. My new size is Large. That's a big change from a size 2X and even the 1X that are now too big on me. Have you been able to find good buys in the thrift stores near you? Or like me, you only shop regular discount stores? Thanks for reading.

@lnillerman Do you take them to the thrift shop or just hold onto them?

I did the opposite today. I needed retail therapy big time, so drove to a shopping center in Westchester New York. I was a bad girl.

I don't think you could be a bad girl. I know how much you love shopping.

@just4him - One of my daughters who teaches school and has two growing teenagers she is raising also goes to the thrift store sometimes. However, like you, she has discovered she does just as well, as sometimes better, when she shops at WalMart. Sometimes stores which seem like bargains are really not bargains.

Sometimes,I find really nice unused stuff still with price tag attached to them at thrift stores. But agree that sometimes they are not cheap at all.

It's sad they aren't. It seems they are in competition with the regular discount stores.

Kohls can be expensive. We no longer have a KMart here, so I'm left with Wal-Mart or TJ Maxx for discount stores.

@Courtlynn I had to go there for my husband's and sons jeans as well. They were the only store to have the in-between sizes they wore.

@just4him kohl is definitely expensive. But I only shop there when I have giftcards, coupons and or need new jeans and they're on sale. As thats the only place that sells 'mudd'. Besides that, only went there when my bf and mom had credit for there.

I agree some thrift stores are not for the bargain conscious. You are better off at Walmart. I don't like the Goodwill store at all in the big town. The prices are high..there is one run by the church that has great prices, but the hours of that one are strange. There is another one I know of where the prices are good, and they also will give out food..so win, win..that one is a bit out of the way though.

@snowy22315 I forgot about Good Will. Both the thrift stores are run by the church. One is Catholic charities, and the other is non-denominational. Good to know about Good Will. I probably wouldn't have been happy there either.

Sometimes I run across good deals at the local thrift stores. I agree that some of their prices can be shocking. I really want to venture out to the Good Will stores in some of our larger cities to see what I can find this summer for the kids. They usually have nice name brand clothing for cheaper prices that have not been worn much.

I need to find some slacks. Walmart's selection of women's pants is downright awful so I will probably head to a thrift store!

I skip goodwill since everything is for a huge profit and it doesn't actually benefit anyone except the owners who have huge salaries. salvation army usually has things at a decent price. I pick up items from time to time when they run tag sales. otherwise, I find better deals shopping clearance at the regular stores!

Like many and you, I too, have found brand new at Walmart, Jeans West, Target is cheaper. I signed up for free email notification from Savers and get jeans like Lee jeans for way cheap, under $5 usually for long pants jeans. These dale prices at Savers I'd worth it.

Our thrift stores are worth checking out as most of the clothes are much lower in price than anything in other stores. Sizes tend to be a bit restrictive though. I hope you find the pants you're looking for.

Thank you, so do I. I realized this morning that the Y has a women's closet which is free. They also have clothes for sale. So, I'm going to look into that this next week.
