What is the most shocking thing you have ever discovered? For me the most recent thing I can remember was looking out my patio window and seeing a hawk swoop down and catch a bird killing it instantly. Then he calmly perched on my deck as he ate that little sparrow piece by piece. I kind of froze, didn't know what to do since the bird was half-eaten, so I just watched rather than leave a half eaten bird in my yard. When the Hawk finished all that was left was a few feathers. Hawks sure do clean their plate! Any shocking discoveries? Photo- YouTube.com

The most shocking thing I discovered about 80 to 100 paycheques strewn all over the floor of a parkade I was walking through. They were paycheques from a local movie production company, each of them well over $3000 per cheque. I gathered them up and located the production company and dropped them off.

Wow! Like hitting a mini-lottery. Nice of you to round the checks up and return them

I hate to see this. Last year I rushed out to save a dove and I was lucky to be able to rush inside the house before the hawk tried to attack me.

This hawk comes by my yard every month or so and the doves being so slow are prime targets. I have been successful in the past to scare the hawk away but it is persistent. I guess they have to eat too Those hawks can do that! I had one swoop right over my head trying to catch prey.

@LadyDuck I enjoy the Doves also. They are such peaceful birds. And great scavengers. They do not miss any bird seed that falls to the ground, lol.

Great Blue Heron and catch by minx267
I have seen this sight as well, I have pictures of birds eating other birds and chipmunks.. but this one was most amazing to me as I watched this bird (great Blue Heron) reach into the pond and come out with this HUGE fish and then walk over to the grass and then throw back his head and swallow it whole.. Alive.. and if a fish could scream it would have been screaming too! this is the photo I was able to get of it with my zoom .. I was across the pond when I saw it all happen!

What a fantastic photo. We have Osprey at our state park which will bring fish to their young. There is a web cam setup so you can see the nest and sometimes you will see the Osprey swoop in with a fish. Your action shot really captures the moment. Here is one my friend took from a wildlife shoot. Not as good as yours though Also a Herron...

Oh. My. That would be shocking. I think you made the right choice as brutal as that was. If you'd have scared the hawk off it likely would have just eaten another bird. :/ I came back home from gardening, I live in an apartment, and outside my door, like right outside I find the maintenance man and a whole pile of stuff . He was working on the ceiling - on the water pipes. Bonus surprise: no water running! Happily they got it fixed.

Yes, I felt so helpless. If only I had seen the hawk sooner I could of saved that bird.

I am surprised that they don't bring their food back to their nest to eat actually.

That's interesting. I'm sure it was fascinating watching it. The most shocking for me came by way of an e-mail yesterday. It was about bees. I learned there are 20,000 species of bees, and hundreds of species of honey bees alone. I found it both shocking and fascinating.

I saw that information about bees too. PBS had a nice feature about bees that I watched a bit of on you tube.
