Road Maps or Sat Navs?

My partner hates sat navs and says he much prefers road maps if he is going somewhere unfamiliar. He says they are distracting when driving and could cause accidents.
I actually prefer sat navs although they aren't 100% accurate because I'm not that good at map reading. They have been introduced to the UK driving test to make sure a new driver is able to follow the instructions and I wonder if this has made it more difficult as it's one more thing to think about.
Which do you prefer if you are going on a road trip, a sat nav or a map?

I think most people prefer sat navs over here. A lot of the older generation prefer maps though.

I think a gps will always get you there but it sometimes takes long and complicated routes.

@LadyDuck That's the thing with sat navs. They don't know the short cuts.

@sprite1950 I hate to see only a small portion of the road. I can see a large area on a map and decide myself which is the shortest route. Should we follow the GPS from home to the Border we will take a complicated long road, while in 3 minutes we can get there.

My partner always pulls over to read a map which drives me insane although I will say we never get lost.

@nela13 He wouldn't use it if I did. He always criticises mine.

I'm glad to hear someone else say that too! I have to plan my routes in advance

@YrNemo I would have been so stressed! Maybe a good thing that you didn't get the job!

@sprite1950 Once, I did consult everything perfectly, and still got lost (the people who made roads were not nice, they put a small street (which I needed to get to for a job interview) behind a freeway. How should I know! It took me 3 rounds on freeways in the same area before I figured out I should not enter that freeway! HALF an hour extra for that drive! I didn't get that job in the end, thank be to God!

Sat navs (GPS) can be useful although sometimes they take you a long way round.

Sat navs are more accessible I guess but nothing compares to a map as it is more accurate.

@sprite1950 Actually, I would get lost in both. I have poor navigational skills.

@mlgen1037 You're like me! I rely on my partner if we are going anywhere.
