Good News On Sweetners

Did you know that there are actually some sweetners that good for us? Astounding right? Many of us are taking all sweets out of their diets and denying themselves of the enjoyment of such flavors. Personally, I always try to use honey in my recipes, tea, etc. It is a sugar-based sweetner and used in moderation it should be okay to use. But, there are several other sweetners that are actually good for us. Take Yacon syrup for instance. It actually feeds the good bacteria in the intestine due to being very high i fructooligosaccharides. It can actually help in weight loss and constipation. At the opposite end of the spectrum is Erythritol, This low calorie sugar alcohol is very low in calories but can cause digestive distress. Stevia is a zero calorie sweetner that is natural and can lower blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Xylitol is another sugar alcohol that has about 2.4 calories per gram. It has been shown in rats that it might improve bone density and lower the risk of osteoporosis.

Stevia makes my stomach feel bad the same way as some other artificial sweeteners do like aspartame so I am not convinced that it is good, my body does not like it.

@celticeagle I wonder if it is the way they process it? I know with Splenda that is the issue, chlorine is produced in the processing.

@sallypup ......Oh, my gosh. That does sound interesting. I like the honey comb too. Chew it like sweet gum. I used to get the different flavors in a hollow stick at the health food store.

It's funny: I don't notice the taste of aspartame in gum, but do in anything else.

We use honey whenever possible - especially raw honey. If we need to use a sugar, we try to use turbinado sugar - which I think is raw sugar.

I like raw honey best. Turbinado is used in many vegan recipes.

I may look into that Yuca Syrup. The only sugar I am eating right now is those that are in the fruits I eat, and a it of cane sugar that is in my favorite yogurt.

I never use any sweeteners in tea or other drinks, but it is good to know there are some good ones around.
