Why are silly or stupid people called 'birdbrain'?

We have birds visiting our garden on a daily basis. We also have fruits that I know we can eat and there are some I see birds enjoying such as the Noni and curry leaf fruits which I did not know we could eat but now -thanks to the Internet I know they are packed with goodness. How do the birds know? This is a million dollar question.
Then we have the hawthorn fruits that look so attractive but birds will not go anywhere near them, I will not try them too as if birds cannot eat them surely they are not edible.
And we call stupid people 'birdbrain' - think again

It is an idiom but idioms should be based on facts. Birds are smart. It is an insult to birds (lol)

@allknowing Yeah...they are. I saw the other day birds feeding fishes. It was so cute. And they have nests before laying eggs. Human beings often prefer to have babies before having a house.

I agree...English has such words created by birdbrains. Sigh..there simply is no logic to English. Very difficult language to learn. Should they be called assbrain? Nitwit is another. I don't know how they can test the IQ of nit. May be they have the technologies we are unaware of.

It is because a bird has a microscopic brain. What you are speaking of is instinct not the ability to reason.

Might actually be insulting for the birds....
literally they have small brain, of course because they are small but definitely not stupid.

It's another way to calling someone , stupid. But I will surely get offended if someone calls me that way , hehehe!!!
