Dressed like a proper little lady

Me between the ages of 2-4

I suppose that is what you could say, that I was dressed like a proper little lady. It would be several years later that I would despise the dresses that I was paraded around in. I'm not sure whose idea it was to dress me like this, my mother's or my grandmother's. I imagine it was a combination of the two. I have several dolls that my mother made up, crocheting dresses similar to these. They remind me of a Victorian lady's wardrobe though it might be attributed to a bit later than that. There's been a lot of talk of old photographs on mylot the last few days. I figured I would share one of my own. I was around three at the time, though I can't be sure of my exact age.

You look gorgeous...royalty...give me a break and your folks too. You can be cute like that only for a few years in your life, pity they did not take a picture of you shabbily dressed. LOL

Oh I have pictures of myself at that age in long sleeves with jogging pants on as well. I don't begrudge my family for dressing me like this but looking at this photo makes me feel itchy. Those dresses were always so itchy.

You look so cute in that photo. My parents did not take too many photos of me, as I was child #6. But I do remember Sunday dresses that I hated to wear as I was not allowed to get them dirty and therefore, could not really play like I wanted.

I remember when I was a child my mom would dressed me like that but I always felt uncomfortable and itchy with the lace and all. I would always ran away as the nanny tried to put on the dress on me. So my mother just quit and I would jus wear shorts and shirts then.

@ScribbledAdNauseum OH yes the starch too! Those dresses gave me goosebumps actually. My hair would just stood on its ends because I was extremely uncomfortable.

@toniganzon I think I was a difficult child at that age in ways, and most likely because of the uncomfortable clothes. They have pretty dresses for little girls now and I wonder if the material is more comfortable now than it was back then.

Yes the lace was so itchy and I felt like they starched the dresses and the starch made me feel itchy.

This picture is so cute, I had similar dresses when I was around 5 years old.

There was this one, a red one I can remember, and a white and blue jean skirt looking dress as well. The latter I don't remember but had worn when I was older. I think there are far more pictures of me as a young child in dresses than there are without.

@LadyDuck I guess it's the right of a mother to dress her little girl up in cute little dresses.

We've been finding a lot of old photographs lately. The above photo was taken on Easter. Since I look about two or three it was either in 89 or 90.

Looking really nice there though and there is a photo of me wearing a hat and coat that I hated to pieces as it had ribbons on it. So I know how that feels.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Hey my Sister was much taller than me so I got to wear her dresses afterwards as I got a bit taller. I did not mind that as they were not filled up with ribbons and stuff just ordinary dresses pretty but not too much. I am very small compared to her really. I did not mind lace it was the ribbons and bows that I did not like either.

My sister had this same dress but a few sizes bigger to fit her. There was a red dress with white lace that I wore quite a bit as a child. I remember having to put on tights as well. This may have been an easter dress, there are photos in the same envelope that have easter baskets around them, though none of those photos have me in them.

@lovinangelsinstead21 My sister was always very lean and a bit tall. She and I weren't able to share clothes. I did get her "hand me downs" but it was only when I was a very small child. We had different fathers and mine came from a bulkier stock.

How cute. I didn't have any girls to dress up, all boys.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes but they complain the whole time

@Debscrochet Well girls might be more apt to like to dress up but I have known a few that have complained about it as well. I remember complaining as I got older.

It isn't as fun to dress up the boys. Though they do look cute in a dress shirt, vest and slacks.

Thank You. It's hard for me to imagine that I was ever so small. So many years have passed since then.

Your young self looks cute in the dress. I remember when my sister and I were young, my Mom knew how to sew and she would make us matching dresses to wear. We are not twins. We are 2 years apart, but she liked dressing us in matching dresses lots of times.

My sister and I are six years apart but we had a matching dress or two. I am sure my sister didn't appreciate having to be matched with her younger sister.

I wore dresses until I was around five. I think when I started school (age 5) they started putting me in sweatpants and a sweatshirt.

@rakski I have a picture somewhere of me and my sister wearing matching dresses. I was a little older than what I am in this picture and our dresses were a blue and white, similar to the one I am wearing in the above picture. Our other sibling was a brother and so he luckily didn't have to match with us girls.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I think that is better. When we were small especially my two older siblings wera the same dress. So all their dress were the same. I was the first one to wear pants. All they have are twinning dress

Very sweet! When I was that age it was the latter years of women wearing long evening dresses for formal events, and little girls wore them too, for birthday parties and whatnot. I shall have to dig out a photo. I loved those dresses; I felt like a little princess.

I am sure I felt very pretty as well but I can only remember how itchy they are now. I can close my eyes and visualize having to have pantyhose and tights put on me.

"Look great" to what their standards were. I think I look quite silly in this picture.
