Owning A Little Piece of History

Perhaps it's just a bit of the little kid still in me. Or perhaps it's a bit of the horror writer I am. But the idea of owning a ghost town is actually quite appealing to me. And there happens to be one that is for sale in California. It's indeed a small town to be sure with just a few buildings. Still, if there can be romance in owning such a thing, it would certainly be here. Obviously I would probably just make a fun backyard out of the whole thing and build a large scale house on the property provided that could be done reasonably, and do a little makeover on some of the buildings—I am not sure I would try to commercialize it in any way. With 300 acres of surrounding land at $925,000 I'd consider that to be a bargain. I wonder if the town could be renamed to something I would want to call it and function as an actual town with a population of two? My wife and I of course. Either way, given the opportunity, and given you had the money to do it, would you want to own a ghost town, and what would you do with it?
Why buy a house when you can buy an entire town?

I think it would be cool to own a ghost town, I would love to buy one and open it for tours with a few repairs of course.

@porwest We looked at one for sale one time, it was called Nevadaville in CO. We worked in the casinos in Central City and it was just a little ways down the mountain from us. It was such a cool little town, I don't remember what the asking price was though.

@cintol I bet there are more places out there that we are just not aware of for whatever reason. I find it kind of neat, actually. If one can afford it of course. Even more if one has the ability to do something with it.

Yeah, I am sure this one would be "as is," and would probably need quite a lot of work and a LOT of capital investment to turn it into a profitable attraction. But it is an interesting prospect.

I feel that where I live now will without a doubt become a ghost town. I would still just keep my own little corner of it, though.

@GardenGerty What makes you think where you live will become a ghost town? You have my curiosity piqued now.

If I could buy this place, I wouldn't live here because I was scared, but I would turn it into a tourist attraction.

Who knows what could be lurking in the shadows there.

No, I don't believe I would. I'd never have a million dollars and if I did I'd probably use it for other things such as a new car and new furniture. If you actually bought it you could make it into a tourist attraction.

A tourist attraction would certainly be a cool, and likely profitable idea. I'm kind of with you, though. A million dollars would be better, for me, suited to be invested... But not in an attraction I'd actually have to run. lol

Funny, my sister seen this yesterday and said we should buy it. We probably couldn't even afford a ghost town though. It would be cool to at least visit it and see if there are any ghosts living there. Let's go ghost hunting!!

Hey, if you can turn it into a proper business, might be able to attract in the right set of investors and make this bad boy a reality.

Hi Jim. I would not consider it as I am too scared of being in a ghost town.
