Public Displays of Affection

Some people are not comfortable being hugged and kissed in public. As some of you know I look after my granddaughter and at first I thought she would be embarrassed about me meeting her from school and kissing her goodbye when I was so much older than the parents there. I needn't have worried as she is quite happy to hug and kiss me when we say goodbye no matter who is watching. My partner is very affectionate and is always trying to kiss and touch me in public but to be honest I'm not really comfortable with it at my age. How do you feel about public displays of affection? Are you comfortable with it or does it depend who it is?

Hi Snowdrop. My husband and I kiss in public but just a smack and we do hold hands a lot. Hugging too but not in a way that is too much that it turns people off.

I think it's to do with age. When I was younger I was fine about it but I don't think people like to see people in their 60s all over each other. Holding hands is fine.

@mlgen1037 I think that's exactly right, most people like to keep things more private as they get older.

@sprite1950 I understand. Maybe we change our perspective on things when we grow older.

I don't mind if I see young people kissing and hugging but I don't like it if it's me.

I did not feel uncomfortable when my mom hugged me in public. I am not uncomfortable if my husband grab my hand, or hugs me, but he knows that I do not appreciate to be kissed in public.

@sprite1950 I am shy and I do not like to get attention from people. Kissing in public is something I never liked.

@LadyDuck I'm not shy but I think when you reach a certain age it isn't the sort of thing people want to see when they are walking down the street.

There are proper places wherein you can show your affection. But there are boundaries to how much of a showing of affections is proper in public. Doing too much could lead to a scandal and might inconvenience people. A short kiss on the cheeks or lips, a goodbye hug, or holding hands are okay to be shown in public. But too much passionate kissing, very long hugs, and touching the privates are definitely out of bounds. I think there are laws about public shows of affections.

I so agree with you. When I was younger I didn't mind a quick kiss but now I am older I do not like public displays although I think holding hands is ok.

@sprite1950 It makes me wonder when a public display of affection is good. I think there are instances where they are acceptable such as a grand reunion after so many years with a loved one who went overseas. A war veteran who came home to his family and saw them at the airport. I think it all depends on the circumstances and the atmosphere. (hehe) But generally, I frown upon it.

@GopherDanny You're right.when it's a special occasions it's natural to hug and kiss after not seeing loved ones for a long time.

I have no problems in kissing and hugging my children in public and they don't seem to mind too but it is different with my husband, we always hold our hands when we go out.

I don't mind when it is my children, but not when it is anyone else. I don't like to see other people in public being all touchy-feely. Some people look like they need to get a room when they are like that. It just makes me uncomfortable.

@sprite1950 I have never been comfortable with PDA. I don't like bringing attention to myself so it isn't anything I would ever do. I am glad you have straightened your act up now that you are older.

My husband and I have been married for 50 years and we often hug and kiss in public, I have no problem with it at all, I pretty much hug everyone.

Depends on the person and their partner should respect that if they are not comfortable with it in public. Showing affection to children is fine.

I am totally uncomfortable with it. Affection, especially to adults, must be confined to the bedroom. I mean, why show the world that you can kiss or hold hands?

Oh I am very affectionate. PDA is not a problem. For some reason, my bOyfriend is reserved when it comes to pda. Haha... Between him and I? I should be the one to show some decency hahaha .. he loves me with all his heart, though. ??
