Helen Hunt Falls

As is the case with most of the country (I'm guessing. I actually have absolutely no idea what the hell is going on in the world at the moment, by choice. I just can't handle it right now.,) Colorado Springs is in the midst of a heatwave. If we didn't actually hit 100° yesterday, we were close enough for government work. So we took a short drive to shady Helen Hunt Falls. Helen Hunt Falls is located in North Cheyenne Canyon, located on the west side of Colorado Springs. While not exactly a raging waterfall, the area features some very pretty scenery, a lot of shade, and is quite popular with both tourists and locals. In fact, I spent a lot of time hanging out at Helen Hunt Falls back in the 80's, before I was old enough to legally drink alcohol. The falls are named for Helen Hunt Jackson, author of the classic novel, Ramona, who lived in Colorado Springs in the late 1800's while seeking treatment for tuberculosis. In fact, although she died in San Francisco, Helen Hunt Jackson is buried here in Colorado Springs. A portion of her Springs home has been relocated to the Pioneers Museum in Downtown Colorado Springs, where it sits on permanent display. In addition to being a poet and author, Helen Hunt Jackson was also an American Indian Rights Activist, spending her free time both investigating and criticizing the government, through letters to the New York Times, circulating petitions, and raising money for the cause. She's a big deal around here, with several things named after her, including a local middle school, and, of course, a pretty waterfall. (Photo by me) (Info verified by Wikipedia)

@allknowing - Yes, actually. Fort Collins is probably 100-150 miles from Colorado Springs.

You know, after spending most of my life in Colorado, there are so many things there I never knew about or even visited. I will have to remember these things for when I come back

I've lived here for over 30 years, and there is a lot that I haven't done or seen yet. We're going to try to get to some of it, though.

@NJChicaa - I'm dealing with it the best I can. Getting away from Facebook has definitely made a difference. I only go on there if someone asks me a direct question for the time being.

Were it not for the photo, I really thought that Helen Hunt (the Hollywood actress) had an accident upon reading the title of this discussion.

Go where it's cool. Not "hip," lower temperature! I'd love to see that with more water flowing.

It's definitely more impressive that way, but we haven't had much in the way of rain lately. We do have a chance of it overnight, though. We need it, fire danger is extremely high. Manitou has even cancelled their annual July 4th fireworks.

She's one of the big names in Colorado Springs history. Her, General William Jackson Palmer, the founder of Colorado Springs, Zebulon Pike, the man who discovered Pikes Peak, Spencer Penrose, a local, wealthy philanthropist back in the day, seemingly everything in town is named after one of them!
