Tis the season for -- FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!

Hot and dry summers around here means a high risk for fires. In fact, you can almost guarantee that some place in California is on fire at some point during the season. There were TWO big grass fires in the area today, and one of them just down the road from me. The above picture was taken at the light rail station nearest to my house. You can see where the hill is blackened and burnt. Only 100 acres have burned and the fire is mostly contained, but it's still pretty scary to have that happening so close by. The other fire, only 20 minutes away from us, burned 3 outbuildings (which is apparently another name for large barns) and killed 4 horses. Photo credit goes to Jeff Vanerwegen on Twitter.

We only get rain during the winter months, so the soonest we'll have any might be November.

@simplfred Maybe, maybe not. Climate change and drought has made a big difference here.

It's sad to see these. Honestly, don't people pay any attention to the fire bans? So few of those are started by "natural causes" (e.g., lightning strikes).

There was a fire here a few years back caused by a pigeon making a circuit on some wires.
Investigators said a four-alarm brush fire in San Jose, Calif., may have been caused by a pigeon perched on a high-voltage power line.

I am so sorry for those poor horses. We received yesterday the flyer with the ban to light open fires. It has been hot and dry the past week.

Sadly, it's something we've come to expect from summer here in general. Everything is so dry.

People always laugh at me for living in New Jersey which is mocked as "the armpit of America" due to an area which has stinky oil refineries. It also has gorgeous beaches, mountains, and farmland. The state nickname, believe it nor not, is "The Garden State". Anyway, I like living here because we aren't really at risk for any "extreme" weather except hurricanes. . . and the chance of a direct hit here is very very slim. We had one almost 6 years ago (Hurricane Sandy which demolished the area) but that was a very very strange set of circumstances. Usually, for a hurricane to hit NJ, it would have to hit one of the Carolinas first, bounce off of it, and then be spun back towards land into our state. Very rare. I would never want to live in a state where earthquakes, fires, or tornadoes are common. You can't prepare for them. They happen suddenly. Hurricanes and nor'easters. . . you have days to get ready for them.

Oh my goodness. We get a lot of fires here as well and it is always so scary. I do'nt live anywhere near those places, but after the Yarnell Hill fire, I always just feel so awful when I hear about fires in other places.

Is that the fire where several firefighters were killed and they recently made a movie about it?

@spiderdust We are also experiencing fires here in Israel not of our doing. They are kites that they set on fire from Gaza and through at our People that live in the South by their border.
