Does this sort of thing happen any more? We recently had our 53rd wedding anniversary, so I decided to look at our wedding photos. I came across the one above where I had all these men doffing their hats to me. I wonder if this was unusual as I've never seen any other similar photos. If you are married did you have anything like this at your wedding?

Yes they used to do that sort of thing in 1865. The old traditions are sadly dying out Janet. Happy 53rd to you and hour husband,. Next big one for you is diamond!

@jabouk Congratulations! Never witnessed doffing on such occasions. What is common though is the groom's party wearing kilts whether or not they are of Scottish descent. At the less decorous weddings the men invariably lift their kilts and show their bottoms. I refuse to attend kilted weddings because there are some things I don't need to see.

I'm with you about the kilts, though I do think men look nice in them. I can do without seeing what's underneath though.. (I'm coming to see if you've written any more of your African adventure ).

As the bride I did have photos taken of the guys all holding me up. But I do love your picture much better, a lot more classy. Happy anniversary (belated)

@jaboUK I have to learn how to use our scanner and then I'll share. Although they are old photos and might bring quite a lot of laughter to anyone who views them.

@Juliaacv I haven't got a scanner - I just take photos of the old photos and get them on here that way.

I married in a Catholic Church, the men had no hat on their heads, I was greeted with throwing rice when I stepped outside the Church. I was going through my wedding photos a few days ago. I found two full albums in my mom's apartment. Belated Happy Anniversary Janet.

@jaboUK Usually men in Italy did not wear the hat when they knew they had to go to Church. I am going to scan some of my photos, where I am alone, I know that my husband does not like that i share his photos online.

@LadyDuck I can understand your husband not liking recent photos being put online, but those from long ago - surely he wouldn't mind them? Not many of us are recognisable in old photos.

The men didn't wear their hats in the church - it's funny that it's ok for the women to do that, but not the men. They wore them before and after the ceremony. Do you feel like sharing some of your wedding photos? I'd love to see them. Thanks for the anniversary wishes Anna

That is such a nice photo, and a lovely gesture. Was it outside the church? We don't have that custom here . No hats for one thing, some communities have a head gear called turban

That's a great photo. Did not know wearing hats was still in fashion. Thought it was an ancient style.

@jaboUK - I just had lunch with @ElizabethWallace (remember her) and told her about your post. She said she could not even recall a wedding where the men wore hats, so she thought your picture must be very special.

You made a very beautiful bride! The men didn't wear hats to doff at my wedding. I was raised in a chair by the men and paraded around.

Happy belated Anniversary. This is a very interesting photo. I would frame it and hang it on the wall for a conversation piece. I got married at the local magistrate. Nothing interesting there.

That shows respect and appreciation, I believe. It is well deserved indeed; after all, you have crossed half a century. In our rituals, there are some carried forward from days when marriages were conducted when both the bride and groom were still not adults. They include some games and songs to encourage the couple to know each other. Now one waits to get settled in life and sometimes they unsettle a settled life sadly! Lots have changed now with the rich overdoing each other in terms of extravagance - siva

@jaboUK It is no more in practice except, maybe, in tribal communities. The girls have put their foot down and are more independent than previously - siva
