Ever heard of Pedal Prix?

On our last Sunday in Adelaide, South Australia, we watched our friend’s daughter practising for her next Pedal Prix race. Pedal Prix involves racing velomobiles around enclosed circuits for a period of between 6 and 24 hours. Our little friend is in a school team. There are also races for adults.
Velomobiles are similar to recumbent bicycles and tricycles but are fully enclosed. The ones we saw had one wheel at the front and two at the back. The person lies back and pedals while steering with his/her hands. Each team member does laps on a circuit and teams compete against each other.

@judyev Never heard of it but there is a man here who has a similar vehicle with a baby seat to the fore. He lies recumbent and pedals away but it sits very close to the ground and it well nigh invisible to drivers of cars. A tad too dangerous for my liking but a lovely way to travel if you had the road to yourself.

I think they look pretty scary. Some have flags which fly at about eye level which is supposed to help motorists see them. You wouldn't get too many second chances with these if you had an accident. The safety angle has been covered pretty thoroughly with these. They have reinforcing inside in case they turn over, which they do from time to time. The drivers wear helmets and seat belts and are seated on foam padding to make them sit at the optimum height for their size. And they wear special shoes with cleats that clip onto the pedals. Nothing can go wrong!

Wow, that looks like hard work and it's too hot here for me to do that. Maybe in the fall when it's cooler.

@JudyEv And I'm sweating enough these days with little movement as the temperature is hot and the humidity is high.

@1hopefulman I'm not at all keen on high humidity.

It is the the first time that I heard about it. Sounds interesting and for sure if given a chance to ride it my kids will have a good time.

The kids that are involved really love the time they get to spend in the velos.

I never heard of Pedal Prix but it's intriguing and looks like it could be fun. I imagine you'd have to be a child or small person to fit into one of those?

I guess so although there were some adult men in some. I think they are probably built to fit the person.

I've never heard of Pedal Prix but it sounds like a great activity for young kids. When I was a kid, we had neighbordhood competitions (mostly boys) who raced homemade carts, using human kids to push them to victory!

It looks a lot of fun but does build up endurance and strength as well.
