It is Shark Week on the Discovery Channel this week. It is broadcasted in 72 countries and started in 1987. Originally the shows were developed to raise respect and awareness. Sharks are amazing animals. They rarely get sick and their tissue appears to have antibacterial and anticoagulant properties.
There are 201 sharks on the endangered species list. It is estimated that for every one person that is killed by a shark 25 million sharks are killed. To lose many of these ocean predators could greatly alter the balance of our marine ecosystems.
Shark finning is a pressing concern. They just remove the fin and leave the shark to die. It is against the law in most areas. The fins are used in the infamous Chinese shark fin soup.

Too many animals are slaughtered for some stupid "aphrodesiac" or exotic food dish.

Sharks are very amazing animals. I have a friend who dives and swims with them. He says it's better than swimming with the dolphins.
