One of my grandpas was German. He came to Chile when he was very young and fell in love with my grandma, daughter of a couple who had come from Spain. He never went back to Germany again.
He told his wife and his daughters about German meals and I suppose that my grandma asked some German ladies to tell her how to prepare them. His favorite had coarsely shredded red cabbage cooked in diced onions with diced apples. Before serving a bratwurst was added to heat.
I had a couple of delicious smoked bratwursts and today I made my grandpa´s favorite dish. I´ll also boil a small potato just in ase anyone of us is hungry. It is delicious. Have you tasted it?

@LadyDuck I´m sorry. Then it is wonderful that you are not tempted to eat it

I love it. I just went to add a bit of white vinegar I had forgotten.

@marguicha Even if I liked, I cannot eat cabbage due to a kidney stones problem.

Yes I like red cabbage prepared like you described as well as adding it shredded and raw to a tossed salad

Anna just said that it is not good for kidney stones so you had better not try it.

I did not eat it until I was grown up. There were some foods my mother never made.

No but I would love to know how to cook it, I have been so bored with our food lately.

This post showed up in the sideline because someone posted about bratwurst. But I like red cabbage too. I like it raw in salads best. But that cabbage/onions/apples sounds good. Today I had stew that I had made. It had cabbage and apples in it, plus meat, carrots, onions and green beans.

@JohnRoberts
It smells less when you steam it instead of cooking it in water.
