Maybe we should thank abusers.

Lately in my country, many men that have been the main reporters and people in the media for decades have been accused of abuse and harassment to women who worked with them. Many of them did not dare tell anyone what they went through, including very well known Chilean actresses. Now things are changing. It may be that in some cases people have not been so guilty. But we have to make people (and I don´t mean only men) that we must be respected. I was always respected, but I did not realize how lucky I was until I was quite old. It is a shame, and a centuries old shame, that women have not had a voice, equal paid jobs and the means to defend themselves. So, thinking about all that it is happening now, the investigations in the Chilean catholic church for decades of abuse, the harassment of so many people, I can only say that maybe the empowerment of the ones without voice have occurred because some of the well known abusers have been discovered and penalized. It is a moment of thinking about this and wishing that something good will come of it all.

No we shouldn't thank abusers. We should thank the victims for being strong enough to speak out against their abusers. We should thank the journalists who write their stories. Screw the abusers. May they rot in hell.

I should have said that we should thank that the fist abuser was caught. You are right. I didn´t mean it that way.

You surely know very well that Catholic priests abused more young boy than women and they are still too much protected by the Vatican.

This is changing in a big way in my country after the visit of the Pope to Chile. Pope Francis was shocked that so few Catholics went to see him here. And there were protests nearby, something that had never happened. So he sent a comisión and a huge cauldron of filth has been found. The Pope is doing great things and now many abuses that only the church could punish will be taken by the normal Chilean law. Abuses now will not prescribe.

@marguicha A Priest was caught yesterday in Italy, he has abused for several month a 12 year young girl. The Vatican has not even removed him from his Church. The people who live in that city do not want him anymore, but nothing "official" has yet to come from the Vatican. We read histories like this one almost every day in the Italian newspapers.

@LadyDuck I hope Pope Francis can do something as he did in Chile. I suppose that it depends on the power the Pope has in a certain place in relation to the other priests. I like Pope Francis, but not the church.

Sometimes things do change from generation to generation and things are learned from these changes. I do hope something good comes from it all.

In my country more things are coming to light this year than in all the rest of my life. I´m glad that finally a woman doesn´t have to be lucky to be respected.

Yes it's good. But people can use this movement in bad way as in accusing innocent people to get back at someone.

While this is true, accusations should be proven.

Abusers should learn their lessons well from victims who have the courage to speak up. It is the role of journalists to tell the world about the truth, so such atrocities will end.

In my country, lately, women from the media have finally decided to acuse the reporters that worked with them. Things are complex. And a lot of courage is needed.

It seems that every generation brings a new movement that brings to light these atrocities. It's a chain reaction. One person's courage inspires many others to speak up. Empowerment comes in the face of courage.

I agree. I was shocked when Bill Cosby was brought to trial. But that was the tip of the iceberg and now women are stating to say everywhere that enough is enough.
