A Scary Event

A couple of nights ago I heard some noise at my door.
I was a little distracted, and after about ten seconds the sound ceased. The next morning I walked out and down the stairs to take my dog, Annabelle, for a walk. As I was exiting the breezeway, one of my downstairs neighbors stopped me. She thought I ought to know that the night before, a man had tried to get into my apartment. She was sitting in her car, headlights off, in front of the apartment building, talking to her husband. They saw the police in another part of the complex, and then they saw a guy sprint upstairs to my floor (a couple of buildings away). He tried all four of the apartments on my floor. Apparently, he went doorknob to doorknob, trying to get into any apartment that might have an unlocked door. After he was unsuccessful, he sprinted down to the bottom floor (sort of underground), and disappeared. She said the police never found him.
I could not believe how close I was to major danger. I mean you think a guy who tried to get into your apartment is going to leave when he opens the door and you demand him to go?!
While I live in a low income apartment complex, we have never had serious crimes committed here. In my buiding, the only time the police were called were for noise reasons. I think once, in a building across the way there was an argument between a couple, and the police were called. And, when I first moved here, someone was busted for marijuana. As I am typing this I remembered two robberies. They weren't at home at the time, but their apartments were broken into. Unfortunately, that happens in apartments everywhere. Even the high end apartments. Heck, what was that occasion at the penthouse in New York when a patient confronted a doctor and shot him and his girlfriend? Bad things happen everywhere. Although, admittedly, the richer you are, the safer you are in your home.
What I referenced in the beginning of the discussion is basically all the events that had ever drawn the police to my apartment complex.
I'm not dwelling on it, but I am thankful I am safe. It's kind of funny. My front door will not close unless I lock it. Something happened a couple of months ago, and my door is messed up. As a result, I can only close it after I successfully lock it from the inside. I usually did that anyway, but this assured it.
Have you had any close encounters?

Oh wow. Just wow. I am so glad that it wasn't any worse. I have an acquaintance that lives in low income apartments and she is constantly posting about how there was "another shooting nearby" or even in her complex.
She's been trying to get out for awhile now.

That is really scary. If that happened here I would be totally freaked out and would re activate my security system.

@snowy22315 I don't blame you. It's pricey.

@AmbiePam I have ADT installed. It hasn't been active for years though. I got tired of paying the bill.

I don't think that the richer you are the safer you are, as I feel that you are more of a target.
I had a close encounter one night that frightened me too.
It was winter time, and my husband was working until 11pm, and it was after dark, probably around 8pm. I was in our bedroom folding laundry and putting it away, and heard someone banging on the front door. We had a door beside the garage doors with a doorbell, that would have been a logical place to go since the person wouldn't have had to come up on the porch. I was too frightened to answer the door. I slid, on my belly, across the hardwood floor to see the car back out of our laneway and go down the road.
I never knew who it was, as I didn't recognize that car. And anyone who knows us knew to ring the doorbell next to the garage door.
There was another house with brick the same as ours down further from us, and we wonder if they were looking for someone there.
I'm glad that you are safe. Keep your door locked and draw your curtains so that you cannot be easily seen from outside.

@Juliaacv And although she's a Chihuahua she thinks she's a pit bull! Seriously, my friend has several dogs, and one is a pit bull. Every time she sees her she acts like it is her long list sister.
Luckily, the pit bull is like a goofy puppy, and loves her too.

I have had a few actual encounters and I believe that if you don't let fear take charge you should be okay even if the circumstances looks grim.
Years ago when I was living in NH with three other adults of various ages our house was broken into and some money was taken. At the time we were all there to teach the Bible to others and offered fellowship to any from the community. A common practice was to allow people to give and that is what the person came back for. I don't know if he thought we had hundreds of dollars just sitting there or what but it was probably less than twenty.
He didn't take it and leave he also came into the room a girl and I shared and opened the door and turned on the light. I've no idea whether one of us screamed or whether an angel scared him but he ran out quickly.
Our front door had a security chain which I think he somehow crashed through. I've no idea how we didn't hear his entry, but our room was at the back of the house.
I had a different type of encounter at a job and another while driving my car as well

About a year ago, there was a guy outside my apartment knocking on my window. I ignored him, and then he found a way into a security locked building and knocked on my door. Freaked me out. Believe it or not, I answered the door, not knowing it was him, thought it might be maintenance since they have keys to get into all the buildings. It turned out he was looking for a cat. I thought that was suspicious, and I talked to the office first thing the next morning as soon as it opened. It turned out they were cat sitting. There aren't supposed to be animals in the apartments and the person who was cat sitting, was told never to have a cat there again.
I'm glad you weren't hurt and your door was locked.

Our vehicles have been broken into sitting in our driveway but not our house, thank God. My brother though who lived in the same neighborhood did have his house broken into.

@AmbiePam They destroyed the dashboard of our truck removing the radio which is evidently hard to find and we couldn't really find a replacement either.

Someone climbed in my window when I was not home, I did not see anything gone. How did I know? First I felt it when I came home, next when I sat in my chair it was not quiet right, I looked under it and it was moved a couple inches over and you could see the old imprints in the carpet.
I was so weirded out that I tossed all the food in the fridge afraid someone had done something to it.

fortunately you've locked the door, otherwise .. we do not know what happened
when I was a kid I once walked across the railroad tracks. I somehow didn't seem to hear the sound of a train coming from my right side, but when the gliding train rang the bell I knew right away, understood and jumped behind to avoid the train that was running quite fast
almost, I almost got hit by a train
I was in the second grade of junior high

That is scary.
I had my pants, a jacket stolen years ago. That desperate. When I woke up in the morning I have noticed the pants were gone and the jacket.

Oh wow... I would have been terrified! I don't think that anything like that has happened lately. I'm more concerned with bears that have been spotted on our road.

That was scary. I am living in my parent's owned house in the reserve and this place doesn't have such encounters. I guess apart from being rich in order to have security, one can just live in a rural area. This is not so easy though, especially if all your work is in the urban areas.
