I was reading some news about ex President Obama.

At one point the reporter wondered if Obama´s wife would try to go for the US Presidency. And I wondered whether ex President Obama could not run himself. In my country, a President has to wait for a term to run again. But he or she can do it. I don´t know the laws in the US, but from the outside, it would be a wonderful change. Enlighten me, American citizens: can it be done?

@LadyDuck Now if that is a way to refrain a man like Trump to become a lifelong dictator, we must be happy.

@marguicha I fully agree with you and it is a shame. Ten years is the maximum number of years, but two terms is the maximum consecutive.

I am not an American Citizen but I have lived there for a decade. As far as my understanding goes, one can not run in election after two terms. Obama has already served two terms. This is a good law to prevent dictatorship and misuse of power. Michelle Obama is a well educated graceful lady and with her experience as first lady, she can be a good choice for presidential candidate. But I heard her saying it loud that she is not interested. Maybe she changes her mind later. It would be good if she becomes president one day..the oldest democracy of the world has yet to get a woman as President.

True. And she also has the experience of living with a very good politician and better human being (as I see it).

I don't know the rules in US, too. But Obama's wife has a very good education and she shall have enough relevant experience and she will be qualified to run the selection and it will be cool that she will be the President of USA one day.

They have a limit of 10 years maximum here, with each term being 4 years. So basically no he cant run again as he would have to quit after 2 years. He did 2 terms which equals 8 years. The vice president becomes president if something happens to the president. As long as that is not over 2 years long he can still do 2 full terms as president if he wishes to run and wins.

I suppose that this is a law to avoid dictators. Interesting.

The Twenty-Second Amendment says a person can only be ELECTED to be president two times for a total of eight years. This law was enacted after Franklin Delano Roosevelt left office. The only instance where a President could do more than two term now is in the rare case that Vice-President becomes President. The only possible example in my lifetime was that of President Lyndon B. Johnson. LBJ became President when he took over after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. In this case, LBJ was easily reelected in 1964. He could have ran again for another 4 year term in 1968, but to the surprise of most people, he chose not to run. Michell Obama would really have guts to run for any elected office after their family had to endure the hatred and ugliness of small minded individuals. Personally, I look foward to a more diverified Congress. We need to get rid of some of them "good 'ole (bigotted white) boys", whose narrowed mindedness prevented progress during the Obama Administration. Many Republican Congress people had confessed that the main objective of the new Republican majority in 2010, as intructed by the Republican leadship, namely Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner was to prevent anything that President Obama wanted, even if it was good for the country.

@flpoolbum For many people from other countries (like myself) President Obama was an example of a good President. From the outside, we could see the progress he wanted.

In the US a President doesn't have to wait for a term to run again but he can only serve 2 terms (8 years). Michelle Obama won't run for President. She has made it abundantly clear that she is NOT interested.
