Wild animals of Montana?

When I was up in Montana, I saw a red fox. That was pretty cool. It was up at a high mountain pass on the way to Missoula. Near my cabin I saw plenty of deer and squirrels, but no bears or mountain lions, though some do roam our mountains. I also saw one dead rattlesnake near Gilt Edge, an old mining town that's in a rockier part of our mountains. But this wild turkey was just strolling around our apartment complex here in California. Usually hens travel in groups, so I was wondering how this poor thing got "lost." I snapped the photo from my truck, clucked at her a bit, and moved on. Do you have wildlife living near you? Here in California, we have wild turkeys everywhere, not to mention squirrels, skunks, possums, and raccoons. On Mt. Diablo, a few miles away, we have coyotes, mountain lions, rattlers, and bobcats as well. But we see more coyotes than anything else.

We have wild turkeys, lots of squirrels, skunks, raccoons, and might have possums, not sure about that one though. I did see one strange animal once, that might have been a possum. It didn't look like any of the others common to the area. We also have lots of deer. I saw one on the way to church a couple weeks ago.

I saw plenty of deer in Montana. We Have them here too. Possums look like large fat rats to me. Except not as cute, poor things. I took only one deer shot up in Montana. We stared at each other for literally a minute or two before I snapped the picture.

@just4him He (she, probably) does indeed. She was still staring at me as I drove off.

Yes, we have lots of wildlife. A couple of month's back I saw a red fox a large one, out for a stroll in the woods behind my deck. Deer show up here regularly. We also have plenty of gamebirds.

Same as @MALUSE, plus bears in the north. The only venomous snakes here are Vipera aspis. The problem is that often you cannot see them and if you step on them they bite.

@TheHorse They are highly venomous, yes an adult can die from a viper bite.

@LadyDuck Yikes. At least our rattlers are considerate enough to rattle. Its purpose is to tell us to go away, which I do.

How venomous are they? Can an adult die from a bite?

I have it all but bear and big cats. Last week headed to town I passed a field with about 30 wild turkeys.

It's funny that I drove close to 150 miles to "hunt" turkey on my friend's property in Northern California. There are wild turkeys all over the place here in the Bay Area suburbs. Don't worry. I had my friend's dad's 12 gauge shotgun in hand bit never got a shot off.

I live by the hills so the coyotes come down. There's the usual squirrels, raccoons, possum, skunks and I have even spied a couple rabbits.

Yeppers, I'm not surprised our visitors are similar. I'm yet to see one our cougars. I think I saw one bobcat when I was riding my horse on the trails.

Do you at least have some squirrels and birds? We did in inner-city Chicago when I was growing up. And disgusting rats, of course.

@vsai2008 Did they attack the clothes and cushions outside? Or inside? I've had wood rats in my ceiling. But never rats inside my house. Mice...that's another matter.

We have just about all that plus a few more. We have copperheads and eastern rattlers.

Copperheads are nasty because they don't rattle. But I've heard their bite isn't quite as bad.

Not surprised. Are they found in New Zealand as well?

@JudyEv Interesting! I wonder if New Zealand has other species that are unique to the Southern Hemisphere, and similar to what you have in Australia. In my life, so far, I have been to Europe, Canada and Mexico, but I have never been South of the equator.

@TheHorse Do you know - I had to look it up! Apparently wallabies have been introduced into New Zealand but are not native to the islands. Tasmania has kangaroo species.

@Courage7 We had a lot where my horse lived. Unfortunately, they'd come at night and steal our chickens and ducks in they weren't locked up. They even got my horse's pet Canada goose eventually.

No snakes, thank goodness. Raccoons, skunks, squirrels, rabbits, the odd deer here and there, once in a while a moose will step up to the median of a highway, black bears and of course, the Ground Hog.

Heh. I forgot our (evil) ground squirrels and gophers. When I read "moose," I thought, Montana? Canada? Yep, Canada. I HAVE seen moose in both Montana and Alberta.

My grandparents lived in the countryside, my holidays were always in the mountains, I really like the stream and the running water, all the animals at dawn surprised me when I listened to them. I experienced something similar.

@TheHorse It's nice to wake up in a different place to the city, smell the morning wind, listen to the roosters singing, the birds and see the cows milking them, drink hot milk with freshly made coffee, it's a pleasure.

No I don't have wildlife near me. You are so lucky that you can see the different animals in your everyday lifetime. This is a beautiful experience I think.
