I was wondering about anorexia.

I wrote a post about bullying a while ago. Now, when I was answering some comments, I wondered about some similitudes with other problems that young people have: digestive disorders.
When I was young, I never heard about bulimia or anorexia nervosa. Now it is fairly common, specially in girls.
And one of the things that I don´t understand is how can a parent live in the same house of a teen daughter and not realize that she is getting too thin.
In fact, even if we are not people who are aware of the color of the eyes of everyone or what a person was wearing at a ball, we do tend to know if someone is too plum or too thin. So why don´t they do something before it is too late?
Does anyone know about this? Is there an answer?

My mother thought all the time that I was too thin. Time by time she brought me to the doctor who reassured her that I was a bit underweight but healthy and not to stress me insisting to eat. My mother stressed me during all her life saying that I am "too thin", while she never said that my brother was "too big" and this was the case.

I was worried for Claudia when she was a girl because she was picky. It took ages for me to discover that she was manipulating me
. The doctor found her very healthy, but I did have her checked (and her not so picky sister).

@marguicha My mother (as every Italian mama) had a BIG preference for my brother, so he was "perfect" as he is, but I was so much smaller and thinner than my brother that she saw me like "anorexic"

this reminds me of something i read a long time ago, that some would even sew stones on the hem of their bathrobe or clothes.

As I just replied, I hug my kids. So at anytime of their life I would have noticed a change in weight.

I'm not sure that, even if they suspect something, there is much they can do about it. You can't force a person to eat and it can be difficult to make them seek help if they aren't inclined to.

I wholly agree. I once heard of a girl that was at the hospital because of her problems. I don´t understand why they weren´t stopped before.
