The Story In The Song Marvin Gaye Abraham Martin And John

Originally recorded in 1968 by Dion, this wonderful deeply moving quite simple tribute to assassinated politicians and civil rights activists has been covered by several artists, but the exceptional stand out version is that of Marvin Gaye from 1970. The poignant lyrics refer to Abraham Lincoln, JFK, Martin Luther King and though not mentioned in the title, Bobby Kennedy too. The singer notices that he only learns of their amazing work liberating the oppressed after they have left us. The very good Dion version has lines in which the four men's spirits unite on the hills over America watching over those in need, but Gaye's version stops with a simple heartfelt lament that they are no longer with us. In the age of Trump we need such mighty heroes again, but as the song shows all too well, the good die young and we may not see their likes again. Yes, indeed. We don't see such great men very often. We would be lucky and it would be very timely for another to come along SOON
