Have you ever belonged to a fraternity or a sorority?

In my country there is no such thing and after watching an American film, I checked it online.
All I have seen in movies have made me be glad that we don´t have such things here as the picture they show is of dreadful parties with things that the poor people who want to belong must do.
But maybe that is just the movies. It is not what the Wikipedia says. So I would like to know what is your experience in this, if you have been part of it.

I didn't want to belong to one, but our older son did. It was awful pledging. He wasn't allowed to tell us what he had to do, but years later did. It sounded like a scene out of a movie. However, being in that fraternity did serve him very well then and when job hunting.

We don´t have that here. I have heard that it can be very negative for some young people.

@Iam_jauntyjen That is so senseless and so tragic. I'm glad the universities here have finally taken action against that brutal and dangerous type of hazing.

@DianneN and @marguicha , In my mother country,Philippines, hazing in fraternities is brutal. Just few months ago, a 22 year old guy lost his life due to severe physical injuries caused by hazing. He would have been a lawyer now.

@marguicha I lost contact to many of them. Some were so nice in personality.

No. I have never been a part of it.
I have a group of female friends in Highschool. We were like sisters.

That´s something else entirely. You have heard me talk about my best friends and how they are like siblings to me.

@Iam_jauntyjen This is a sort of club. But it seems that the members aren´t always correct.

I have understood from movies that they are sort of exclusive clubs of the worst kind. But that could be absolutely wrong.

no I didn't. My community college had a sorority type thing, but I don't think it is like universities have.

I never did but my husband was part of one when he was in college. And he is friends with a lot of the brothers from there to this day. Wish he was never a part of it.
