He Saved the World and you Probably don't Know his Name

Stanislav Petrov is the reason you are alive. You probably never heard of him. He was an officer of the Soviet Air Defense Forces on September 26, 1983. He monitored early warning satellites for any hint that the US launched nuclear missiles toward Russia. The system malfunctioned in 1983 and showed that the US had launched the missiles. He stared at the screen instead of ordering a counter-attack. If Russia had launched missiles at the US, there would have been immediate strikes in retaliation. Other countries may have been drawn into the battle. He saved the lives of millions or even billions of people and you never heard his name. Petrov died on September 18, 2018.

I remember the "1983 Soviet nuclear false alarm incident". The missile attack warnings were correctly identified as a false alarm by Stanislav Petrov, he surely saved the world.

@LadyDuck It is possible. It would depend on how many missiles were exploded and where.

Yes, it would be very different if he was not there at a critical time.

@akalinus Thank you for bringing it to our attention. I have never heard of him and I thank him for saving our lives. I would not be living here in Israel if he did not save our lives.

@just4him I saw a movie about incoming missiles alert but this one was in a submarine. I kept yelling for them to retaliate but this was also an error and it would have been catastrophic if they did. I'm not sure what movie it was.

@akalinus Yes, he was. Reminds me of the movie - War Games. Have you seen it?

Wow, that is pretty amazing. What a very different outcome there could have been if he hadn't waited.

The article said that he knew the satellite must be wrong and that he had no instructions on how long to wait to report it. It said there is a 20-minute window for the missiles to reach Russia from the US.

@Courage7 If a different officer was there at the time, it may have been very different. Many of you might not have been born because your parents would be gone.

If you spend any time on the internet, you know that things can and often do malfunction. But what if it was right?

@Shivram59 Yes, it certainly would and I hope it never happens. Mankind would have to start over. There is always a remnant saved to regenerate the population.
