I see my first sphynx cat

While I was at the Perth Royal Show in Western Australia helping my nephew with his goats, I was able to have some time to look around at the various attractions at the showground. I spent some time in the cat pavilion where a number of cat breeds had been judged earlier. I was pleased that there were a lot of posters containing information about the various breeds but also about cat care in general. There was also photos and information of rescue cats available for adoption. I felt a bit sorry for the cats as their cages weren’t very big and I felt sure they wouldn’t be particularly happy about being confined. They were there at least three days. One had burrowed him/herself under his/her bedding and you could see very little of him/her. The cat that intrigued me the most was the sphynx, which is a hairless cat although the skin is the colour of the coat type. So you can have tabby or tortoiseshell sphynx’s just as you can in furred breeds. Because they have no fur, they feel the cold and may need coats in cold weather. Good examples of the breed will have wedge-shaped heads with prominent cheekbones, large, lemon-shaped eyes and very large ears. They also have thicker than normal paw pads and a whiplike, tapering tail. They are known for the extroverted behaviour and one of those breeds that seem to have a lot of dog-like traits. I could only get a photo through the bars. For myself, I prefer a moggy with fur myself.

@MALUSE I agree. But the lack of fur too is something. Egads!

They are totally cool looking cats. I love the cats that have the Scottish folds for ears. Some cats have crinkly fur as well.

I think one of the myLot members used to exhibit a Scottish fold cat that was very successful. I read at the show that the ears start off upright and fold over at about six months of age.

Thank you. It is spooky isn't it? It would go well as a witch's cat.

A hairless cat is like a chicken without feathers, there is something missing. They would look better with sweaters.

I think so too and if you bought a fur coat it would look much more natural. Maybe it would look good in a zebra faux fur.

I have only seen pictures of them. The only thing I like is the shape of their face and eyes. If you could add fur then I would love to have one.

@judyev A malevolent looking creature that might have just emerged from the swamp. Nevertheless they say that about me and I’m an absolute delight when you get to know me.

@JudyEv No, not bald, but one of my ears is set slightly higher than the other. I've never seen my eyes.

Do you have enormous ears? Or funny eyes? I won't ask if you're bald. That would be rude.

@xFiacre Some people look but never see. Are you one of those? And can you wriggle your ears? That would be a neat talent to have.

That's an interesting cat. Its ears look as big as its head. I'm sure he/she was happy to get home and out of the cage.

@just4him I felt really sorry for it. He/she certainly seemed as though he/she didn't want to be there.

I wouldn't want a pure breed like the sphynx

I don't mind a pure breed but I don't like the oriental type cats with the slanted eyes.

Saw one like that a few years back in my backyard (for about 3 years), then no more. Guess the owner moved house again (as is the case with many families around here, once their children finished with high school). I remembered thinking, 'Gee Gosh, that cat is ugly!'

I don't think they are very common. I'm surprised the owner let it run around. It could have got stolen.

@JudyEv I was too stupid at the time to know that it was an expensive cat. Every time I saw it (often in the early morning), I would look at its ugly face & body, & wonder about God’s wisdom .
