Son2 and I just got back from a walk around the campground. The trek around both loops is about 1.75 miles (2.8 km). While we saw a few campsites that were still roped off and several downed trees, most of the damage from the storm appears to have been cleared. While the Park crews are still working to clear some of the hiking trails, there isn't anything for Son2 and me to do here to help. I took several photos during our walk, but in honor of JJ I decided to use this one of a brave Hurricane Florence surviving squirrel. Shortly, Son2 and I will head out to the beach to see what evidence of the hurricane remains along the ocean front. I hope you're all having a good Saturday, or for those of you on the other side of midnight already, a good Sunday.

Skittish as could be, though.

@thislittlepennyearns I know. Can you believe it? I've been watching the storm as it developed and today it became TS Mike. The current track has it coming right over you and headed right for us.

@DWDavis probably terrified. It looks like we have a storm headed for us soon.

I blame those pesky squirrels for all the downed trees. It's a conspiracy I tell you! The government just wants us to think it was a hurricane that did all that damage; in reality, it was the squirrels. They are taking over!

The squirrels know they are suspects in the downing of the trees. Son2 and I were taking pictures of trees that broke off in funny places and ways. There is definitely, well, kind of, well, might be squirrel marks evident on the trees.

@DWDavis Those pesky squirrels. So they're leaving marks now? That means they're getting sloppy.

We saw some damage in the main part of town. One of the older hotels near the shore lost a large number of roof tiles. One spit of land between the harbor and the ocean was hit quite hard. Most of the rest of the town was in pretty good shape.

Hope you don't find too much damage on your trek to the beach.

It will be interesting to see what businesses have opened back up, the ones that remain closed, and if any have shut their doors for good. I'm hoping most will be open and doing business.

Some of the wild animals must have a bad time of it during a hurricane.

There is a large deer population on the island and I wonder how they fared. I know the seabirds were able to avoid the storm and have returned in large numbers.

The beach had been swept clean. We didn't find anything to catch our imagination.

So far it has been a good trip. We'll see soon what the rest of the island is like.
