I wonder if this Nepalese man has ever sold twelve bikes in a day before

As some of you are aware, my husband, Vince, is in Nepal doing a little bit of charity work. While the main emphasis till now has been on installing wells so that villagers can have clean water, today they have been visiting three schools and distributing simple classroom supplies to all the students. I think they have bought several computers for the children too.
Vin and I raised some money from raffles and selling photographs from several sporting events. He spoke to a local person and has now spent ‘our’ money, as opposed to the group’s money, on pushbikes. This might seem a strange purchase but it will enable some children to get to school. At the moment some live too far away to get to school regularly so the bikes will help address that problem.
Vince bought the bikes in Lumbini I think. He purchased two first which pleased the shop-owner but when he ordered another ten, the gentleman was very thrilled. The first time the group went to Nepal they took pencils, books, etc with them but now they take the money and buy the goods there. It is a much better idea and benefits the local businesses as well.

It's so uplifting to hear about the charity work Vince is doing. We take so much for granted that it's hard to imagine other people not having simple pleasures in life (like water) or that children need a bike to get to school.
A good reminder to count our blessings

@Marilynda1225 He hasn't been in touch yet today but I think yesterday or today would have been the day for giving out the clothes and beanies.

@JudyEv i was thinking like if he needs additional parts or needs help in assembling stuff. if not that, the total cost he'll receive could probably help pay for any debts they have, or pending house repairs, or a family member's health/medical issue.

@hereandthere Yes, sometimes a lump sum like he would get could mean a great deal.

@JudyEv - It is so wonderful that Vince does that. I love the idea of supporting the local businesses. I'm sure he has made a lot of local shop owners very happy!

@JudyEv - I have been told the same thing when there are disasters here in the US or nearby countries like Haiti. People want to send their old blankets or buy new ones in their local stores, but someone has to ship them and find the exact people who would need a blanket and not something else. It is better to donate money to reputable aid groups, like the Red Cross, and they can buy things locally and give people the exact help they need, whether it is a blanket or a generator. It is better for everyone!

That would have been so nice but he is travelling with a group in a little bus and the itinerary has been arranged for some time. I think you are in India? They are in Lumbini till Saturday when they drive to Tansen. Later they go to Pokhara, Jonsom, Bandipur, Kathmandu, Bahktapur then back to Kathmandu. Only Lumbini seems to be near the border. It might be difficult for him to get to you. We will have to arrange something sooner if he goes again.

A good cause. There is a charity called World Bicycle Relief, which provides bikes to students and doctors in rural areas in third world countries, namely, in Africa.

I hadn't heard of that one. Someone in our capital Perth picks up obsolete or damaged wheel-chairs, fixes them and ships them out to, I think, Middle East countries. He has a waiting list of volunteers wanting to help with the repairs. Isn't that great?

@teamfreak16 For sure and we are such a wasteful country, It all started when he saw a skip bin full of functionning wheelchairs that had all been replaced with newer models.

@JudyEv - It definitely is. Kind of sad that something like that is even necessary.

That is very generous of you and Vince to be buying bikes for the children who live far away from school. You'll be amply rewarded by the heavens, Ms.Judy.

@JudyEv God loves the little ones and I'm sure he appreciates people who care for them. Reward does not to be on earth. It may come in the form of contentment in what you have and what you are. The intangibles far outweight what is material. I'm sure you know that so well, right?
