These are red-bellied piranhas - not my own photo I hasten to add!
The reputation of piranhas is that they can shred any animal to bones in less than a minute, but the fact is that piranhas are actually scared of most animals, including humans. They usually eat dead animals, for which their sharp teeth are particularly useful.
We have Hollywood and myth to thank for exaggerating their supposed frenzies, examples of which are extremely rare.

Humans are actually the ones who eat them. They are sold as grocery fish in Brazil. Grilling them ungutted and whole is delicious paired with fried plantains and some salsa.

They don't really attack humans and if they do they just give a nip and fatal attacks are statistically irrelevant as they almost never happen.
It is, yet again, crap films propagating a myth.

Since I prefer to keep all my body parts, I would keep all those parts away from piranhas.
