Black pudding and apple: Savoury/sweet combo

Ireland

I was visiting the Delta Sensory Gardens in Carlow the other day, and feeling peckish, I dropped into their small restaurant. Well, when I saw Hot black pudding and apple salad on the menu, I thought, that's quite daring, and couldn't pass it up. Hey I wasn't disappointed! Black pudding is a kind of blood sausage containing pork offal and barley. The only sweet elements of this dish were the apple slices and the cooked red onions on top. Consuming blood is forbidden in some religions (as is pork generally) but have you ever had blood sausage aka black pudding aka morcilla, morcella, sanguinaccio, boudin noir? Did you like it?

No, blood sausage is not something I like, not at all, I do not even want to try. The simple idea that it's blood makes me sick.

Yes, it's funny, but we all have our food prejudices But when you say, "blood sausage is not something I like", do you mean you tried it and didn't like it?

@NormanDarlo I tried when I was very young, mom liked it, I disliked a lot, even if I did not even knew that it was a "blood sausage". Surely there is food that I like and disgust most people, the fried calf brain "Roman style" with fried artichokes is something I like a lot, also the tripe.

@LadyDuck I disliked a lot of things as a child which I like, or even love, now. This includes most organ meats. I never tasted brain as a child, but had lamb's brain sliced and fried by Arabs in Jerusalem, and by a Romanian lady in the Negev Desert, and adored it! I did order it once in London in a Pakistani restaurant, but it was wet and sloppy and utterly disgusting Can you explain what is "Roman style" in this case?

@mormandarlo I can see how that combo would work. I’ve just picked a load of apples from our tree and made the deepest, most satisfying, most comforting apple crumble I’ve ever had.

Most people have some dietary prejudices, but there's no huge difference, as far as I can see, between eating one part of an animal and eating another

Black pudding is very popular in Ireland, though I bet lots of people don't realise it is largely composed of pig blood If you're fond of pork products such as bacon and sausage, then you would love it (but maybe more so if you didn't know what it was )

@NormanDarlo Adding the word blood doesn't make it sound appealing! lol....but I do like bacon and sausage, so maybe!
