Thinking of Adopting a Rescue Kitty?

Or, maybe you already have. They don't know where they are or who you and your family are. A lot of new smells and a whole new environment can make this new addition to the family an anxious and stressed kitty. There is a few things you can do to make your new furry addition settle in more easily.
First you will want to let them have a space of their own that is equipped with food, water, bedding and litter tray. Let them hide. This is normal behavior. She will want to explore and it is best to take is slow and let her be on her own until she makes it obvious she wants attention.
You might present a piece of your clothing to the kitty and let her get used to it first before yourself. You might also try rubbing her food with your hands. This will help her associate the natural oils on your hands with eating.
Get her some special treats and join her on the floor with them. Gently play with her and talk to her. Being down on the floor means you are less threatening to her. Set quietly at first and let her approach you at her will. It's a slow process but well worth it. Reinforce their name each time you pet them or comb them so they become familiar.
Brush her and let her sleep with you. The warmth of your bed is comforting and many cats like to sleep on a bed. Don't make the new cat do anything she is not comfortable with. Get her space and try to understand this is a overwhelming change for her.

Yes it is @celticeagle I wish I could have given mom's kitties to a shelter but they wouldn't take them because of their ages.

When I got my rescue cat, she was about two years old, first thing she did was hide under the bed and only come out at night. This went on for nearly nine weeks until one day she appeared and jumped onto my lap. Since then she has settled in very nicely
