Does our prayer for them mean a thing?

Tomorrow is the day when we will visit our departed loved ones at the cemetery. It is our tradition here in the Philippines. We will bring candles, flowers and even foods for them. I am even giving my uncle his favorite brand of cigarette because he enjoy it when he was still alive. Most of us are praying for their soul, hoping that they'll be in the right place, the heavenly paradise. I just wonder if our prayers can still be heed or were it vain to pray for them because I know that they'll be judged on what they've sowed here on Earth. Does our prayer for them mean a thing?

Though they will be judged on their deeds when they were alive, it is our nature to pray for their souls.

Are we really judged? I believe in a compassionate God. Most evil comes from hurt.

@TheHorse We can only assume things, I think. It is hard for us to know the ways of God.

I think it's important for our loved ones to be remembered. I always bring two smokes when I visit my dad's grave site.

I think so too. Maybe they are watching us from somewhere. I'm glad to hear that you are giving your dad his favorite thing. I'm thinking that they'll enjoy it.

@simplfred My thought as well. None of us are without sin. There's a sad humor to it. He would appreciate it.

You all have graves to visit. Our people burn and forget. A couple of years we remember, but after that, dates are pretty much forgotten.

I think we will never know if it has any use lest we get there . If you believe the bible it says otherwise but not everyone believes or reads it. Think there is no harm if that is our practice and tradition, it's also a good time for family reunions and bonding.

@vandana7 Yeah, I think you making a great point here. It is more to alleviate our own emotion regarding our shortcomings that we have for our beloved departed when they are still alive.

In my faith, prayer does nothing once people have left this earth. Their soul is where it, is based on how they lived their lives on this earth; and whether they accepted Jesus as their Savior. We miss them, so we go visit their graves; like I do with my moms. There is nothing wrong with celebrating their lives, and sharing the memories. But I personally don't pray for people who have passed away. It does not change anything on their end. I do know Catholics believe in purgatory, so they will pray for the souls to get out, as quick as possible. But in my Bible, purgatory does not exist. I am not trying to offend anyone. I am just sharing what I believe.

@teresatrotter That is correct. We could have prayed for them when they were still physically with us. Our job now is to answer to Jesus' call - Matthew 28:19-20

There are 3 types of community in religious belief in Roman Catholic. Triumphant church, suffering church and pilgrim church. We as the pilgrim church need to pray for the suffering church.

Depends on your faith. Maybe if you're a Catholic then it is important that this time and day of the year we remember those that has passed away and pray for them fervently. For other faith they may have a different belief system and we should just respect their faith.

Of course, prayers mean a lot. Beside their souls are with us and always watching over us. They'll be with you at the cemetery and happy that you still remember and care.

I made a backyard sanctuary kind of. I go there to sit and think about my parents and others who have passed away from this world. I usually try to keep it clean by sweeping the leaves away but I think about them off and on, even though I seldom visit the cemetery where they are buried. It's just me. I do not like going to cemeteries. It makes me very sad to go there. I usually only pray to God that I will one day get to be with them in Heaven when my time here on earth ends.
