Ready for the 2018 US Election to be Over?

Like millions of other Americans, as well as millions of people in other nations, I have been upset over the state of our government since the last US election in 2016. About a year ago, I figured I could continue to whine and complain about what was going on, or I could get involved in changing things. If you knew me, you would know what decision I made. I decided to try to change things. In the preceding two elections, my husband and I supported our Republican US Representative, a woman we knew and who used a photo of herself with my husband and other men at his workplace in her ads. A year ago, my husband and I attended a house party for one of the Democratic candidates for Congress in our District. We immediately liked her and what she had to say. Since that party a year ago, we have supported her through the primaries and until now, right up to the election. She is Katie Porter in CA45, which is the Orange County, California US representative district where we live. According to polls, Katie Porter has a very good chance of beating the Republican incumbent. If she does, she will be the first Democrat EVER to represent our very conservative California district, which is home to Saddleback Church and the minister, Rick Warren, as well as many other evangelical churches. If Katie Porter wins, it will be on the national news. Watch for it. If she wins, think of me. My husband and I were among her original supporters and we have worked hard and donated money regularly over the past year in the hope that she might win! This is NOT the first time my husband and I have been active in politics. In the early 1980s, my husband and I volunteered for another US Representative who we helped get elected in Texas. I also supported Ross Perot when he ran for president and volunteered in his Dallas headquarters in 1992. He lost, but he was a member of our Dallas church and I truly liked and respected him. As I mentioned earlier, we also helped our current Republican US Representative, until we became disappointed with the way she has voted since Trump rose to power. Now, this current election cycle is almost over. What about you? Have you gotten involved in this election? If you live in the US, have you voted yet? Have you ever tried to change things politically in your community?

I'm ready for election commercials to be over. I wish we could have an election without them. I mean, who has been influenced to change their vote from a commercial? All it does is waste money.

Here in Europe most people do not even know that you are voting right now. I know because of myLot and because I read some US newspapers online.

@DeborahDiane We had elections also in Europe and they were important, because Angela Merkel has lost power and she is going to retire at the end of her term. Well, this is a good news.

@LadyDuck - Yes, I have heard that Angela Merkel was in trouble. What do you think of the group which is likely to be replacing her?

@LadyDuck - I can understand, since we are not electing a new president this time around. However, we have a chance to change our US House of Representatives from being mostly Republican to mostly Democratic, which would exert some restraints on Trump ... although he is likely to continue to be pretty much out of control for the next two years, no matter what we do.

I follow the US news a bit, else I would hardly know that you have an election in the USA. The media here are more interested by a referendum in New-Caledonia tomorrow where people will decide if they want to get their independence from France.

@DeborahDiane Not in my area, it is near Australia, and people in France would prefer to see New-Caledonia independent, but they will probably decide to stay French, they would lose too much.

@topffer - You'll have to let me know what happens. I have not seen it mentioned on our US news ... which is really a shame.

This whole business is so out of control. It stopped being politics a long time ago and became an attack on democracy instead. Good for you for getting involved. I have been on a couple of women's marches and yes I voted.

@sallypup - Good for you for voting. I'm also proud of you for attending a couple of women's marches. It is very important we make sure our voices are heard and respected!

@DeborahDiane Thanks. You are right. I am horrified how Trump appears to be whipping people into a frenzy- are people that desperate that they are seeking a war monger??

@sallypup - When I see his rallies on TV (which I try to avoid doing), I am horrified. People actually spend hours going to the rallies, and I cannot imagine spending an afternoon or evening at such an event. They are so full of hate, sarcasm, and lies. I do not understand the appeal, but he always manages to fill up the arenas. I am so disappointed in the Americans who support someone like him. I can barely speak to some of my friends who I know support him.

I am sorry to see that she apparently did not make it, but am delighted that Democrats won the House. They will able to stop efforts to shortchange Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, not too mention other Trump/GOP excesses.

@JamesHxstatic - I learned today that my candidate, Katie Porter, might still win in the CA #45 district!!! There are still 70,000 or more ballots to be counted, because of ones which were received in the mail, as well as provisional ballots cast on election day. It could take another week to count them all. They counted almost 10,000 ballots yesterday, and Katie Porter got 60% of the votes in them. If that percentage continues, or even if it drops to about 55%, she would win the election after all! They say chances are high, because Republicans tend to get their ballots in early and late ballots are skewed towards Democrats. One more Democrat in Congress. My fingers are crossed!

This mid term election is the most talked about since 1994 when Bill Clinton was President.

@Deepizzaguy - I don't even remember that election having people feeling as heated as this one, and I was working in a real estate office with both active Republicans as well as Democrats. Even when Nixon won reelection, after the Watergate break-in, but before he was impeached, did emotions run this high. I hope there is some way we can get back to people making a effort to be more inclusive and accepting of each other, including opposing political views.

My husband has been very active over the years in our town Democratic Party at our town hall. I can't wait to see the national outcomes tomorrow and the following day.

@DianneN - Good for your husband for being so proactive with the Democratic Party. I am excited to see the results tomorrow, too. I am leaving early the morning after the election to fly from here to Philadelphia to see our Delaware daughter. I may not know the final results for the close elections until I get there. I am sure I will be biting my nails during the flight, while I wait to find out how some of these elections turned out!

I feel lost when I see the way democracy (democrazy) is functioning or, rather, letting down the people. I have not got directly involved in politics though everyone should do more than sit on the sidelines - siva
