Do you support local artists and artisans?

As many of you know, I like to refinish old wood products. Sometimes it's small old boxes that can be turned into beautiful storage containers with a little sanding and stain. Sometimes it's old guitar sound holes that can be turned into functional coasters. And most often, it's vintage loudspeakers, that can be made to look (and sound) new. I recently visited an "art fair" where a friend of mine displayed her wares. She's a computer tech, but she also paints and takes nice nature photographs. She's been frustrated recently, because people are buying less and less art spontaneously. I bought three of her photographs and intend to frame them and put them on my wall. I bargained her down from $75 to $70 for the three photographs, and used the extra $5 to buy a cool ashtray that someone had made. My "bargaining" with her is a joke--we used to date, and I take her out for Japanese regularly. We're gonna be friends until one of us moves to the great beyond. Do you support local artists and artisans? It made me feel really good to go on a "spending spree" and buy $75 worth of art from local people. In an era of internet sales and big box stores, I like supporting (and being supported by) locals.

I do when I can. It's unfortunately not always in my budget, but I do have some pieces that I enjoy.

I am donating to charities everything we do not need. I want a house clear of everything that is only there to be dusted.

@TheHorse I am doing, we bring to a local store, they recycle and they give you a coupon for a 15% discount of something you buy in the store.

yes and no. When I go to the Renaissance Festival, I sometimes get stuff made by people around here. But we don't have many art festivals here.

You reminded me--the pinky ring I currently wear (my only "jewelry") was bought at a bluegrass festival.

I'm afraid we rarely do this any more as we are trying to cut down on 'non-essentials' rather than accumulate more. But from time to time we weaken.

@TheHorse I would look at these sorts of things with a view to giving them as gifts. That is sometimes a solution when you want to support someone.

I do! I bought stuffs from local artists too but that didn't cost me that high. Local artists sale it at very low price looking at the crowd or city they shown up. By the way Social Media Appearances are good way to drag good amount audiences to your work. So yeah I would say one should give it a try.

Yes, I do, but they tend to be costly. Last time, I bought a mini bottle of cologne from an artisan and it cost me around 13 dollars.

That's about what I spent on my pinky ring. Bought from a Vietnam vet at a music festival.
