My newest countdown is a look at my favorite albums from a magical year for music, 1986. I was inspired to do this countdown after @miketagz said he was born in 1986. Needless to say, I wasn't: by '86 I'd been in and out of the Navy. Anyway, here's the next album from that great year in music.
#9: So - Peter Gabriel
And to prove that I actually do listen to commercially successful music, here's one of the biggest albums of 1986!
Peter Gabriel was the original lead singer for Genesis, back in their "prog rock" days. When he left Phil Collins took over lead vocal duties, and Genesis became a major "mainstream" rock band. Gabriel's solo albums were simply brilliant, producing FM rock classics like "Shock the Monkey," "Games Without Frontiers," and his great anti-Apartheid anthem, "Biko."
In 1986 Gabriel finally titled an album something other than Peter Gabriel (seriously! His first three solo albums were all titled Peter Gabriel!). It was called So. (Joe Walsh had already used So What.
)
And man, did it take off. Of course, there was that innovative video for "Sledgehammer" (which Gabriel eventually asked MTV to stop playing so people wouldn't get sick of it [side note to MTV: Gabriel meant that video, not ALL music videos!
]). "Big Time" had an equally fun video.
The videos were great, sure, but let's not lose sight of the fact that this is one great album. Humorous at times (let's not forget what "Sledgehammer" is about
), and stunning in others ("In Your Eyes" is on my 100 favorites list), So was Gabriel's biggest commercial success and solidified him as on of the true artists of the 80s.

This is the original version of the song In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel off the 1986 album So. I don't have the video for this song, but the original version ...

@dgobucks226 Lol, I don't know what to say now that I know what "Sledgehammer" is about. I can't believe it. I've been listening to that song since I was a kid.

@FayeHazel And you thought it was about a crazy dancing chicken with no head, sweet tasting cakes, and other assorted imagery, right

I'm an 80s baby and I didn't know he was the lead singer before Phil, even tho I do know some of his songs like sledgehammer because of MTV.

My first boyfriend loved Genesis. I actually bought "So" because of him - maybe I wasn't entirely into Genesis, but from that time I loved Peter Gabriel and that album. I loved "Don't Give Up" and "Red Rain". Funny because he ended up going to Peter Gabriel's concert (didn't bother to ask me to go) with a bunch of guys . . . and one of the guys he went with became my next boyfriend - and ultimately husband
. Yep - this album means lots

Yes, brilliant album and your video selection one of many "choice" tracks off that album. The 80's departed quite a bit from what I enjoyed listening to but there were always a few artists whose albums were unique in their appeal to my musical taste. Peter Gabriel was one of those artists.... Gabriel had tremendous success with his videos as you pointed out. MTV listed "Sledgehammer as one of it's 100 greatest video's in 1999 coming in at #4. The top three:
1) "Thriller" (1983)
2) "Vogue" (1990)
3) "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (1991)
