Sodium In Beer

So, I went to my cardiologist for a stress test, just to be on the safe side. No problems with the stress test, but I do still suffer from hypertension, and so salt is a concern, and months ago, if not a year ago I was put on a salt restriction. As many who follow me would agree, I have not necessarily been a good boy with my salt restricton. The doctor noticed that my blood pressure is still a bit higher than it should be, even with the medication I am on to help with that. He said one word, "Salt." He went on to say, "If you don't watch your salt better I am going to have to increase your medication." So, I will be looking more closely at my salt. Dammit. Either way. But one thing I do consume a lot of is beer. I love my beer. I probably love my beer too much. Well, the wife would certainly agree with that. In any event I was just curious if there was any sodium in beer... And lo and behold, there is indeed sodium in beer. But, I was very happy to learn that there is only about 14mg of sodium in a can of beer. The doc says to keep the salt below 1500 mg per day, and I think that is reasonable. I know how to cook without salt and still make the food taste good. And even if I have a six pack of beer at night that's only 84 mg. I think we are good there. When I travel on business is another story since my options are so limited. I will just have to do more research on particular fast food options to see what the actual sodium is in each one. I am a bit surprised my doc caught me. But then, I guess that's why he gets paid the big bucks.

I think it is more the fast food that you eat when you are traveling. I know it is difficult since you travel so much.

I would have told on you Mr. Domino`s McRib! What you need to do is skip fast food and do into grocery stores and by food. You can get salads and foods that are lower in salt, even vegan if you want. I learned the hard way too. Remember cheese is filled with salt! I am slowly bringing mine back down, no meds.

Since I have kidney stones, my doc said to reduce my salt and I'm trying. But it's hard! I love V8 juice, but it's loaded with sodium. I tried the reduced sodium kind and it was horrible. I guess it's all that salt that makes it taste so good. Good luck with your efforts, though. You don't want to have to increase your BP meds.

Salt is probably one of the hardest things to actually give up or avoid. It's in practically everything.

There are salt alternatives that help the food and I quit using much salt years ago and don't miss it any more. I stopped for the sake of my husband and we switched to less salt but he still Pours too much on certain foods

A doctor once told me that it didn't really matter how much salt you ate as long as you drank enough water to flush it out. I eat way too much salt. I have stopped cooking with it and only add it afterwards, but food without salt is,,,well,,,,yuk.

At least you are aware of the problems and will continue monitoring it and sodium is something that is hard to avoid. Cutting back is always good when you can.
