Kiva offers a good deal on gift cards

I wrote recently about the Kiva organisation which lends money to deserving individuals and groups all over the world. The last email from them offered a free $25 loan if you purchased two $25 gift cards.
We had already decided to buy two Kiva gift cards for my nephew and his friends who share a property where my sister now lives. Normally, if we were seeing them at Christmas, we might have bought them a ‘token’ gift of biscuits or a pot plant or similar. We will visit them and my sister a few days before Christmas and I know they will enjoy choosing a project to support. I’m betting it will be something to do with allowing a third world person to purchase more goats as my sister et al breed award-winning Saanens and dwarf Nigerian goats.
And now I have another $25 to lend to someone. What’s not to like?
The photo is of three of their kids at the Perth Royal Show.

@JudyEv - I have thought about taking advantage of that offer, too. I think some members of my family would also enjoy finding a project to support on Kiva. I'm so glad you are enjoying Kiva as much as I am. It is a great way to help other people by giving them things they actually want or need, not just something we think poor people in other countries might want.

@JudyEv - Ha ha! I'm sure they were bemused by potato peelers. I think Vince was very wise when he bought things from local shops. That helps people in the community the most.

We went to Thailand with a school group once but didn't have anything to do with taking gifts, not that we knew anything anyway. But the Karen villagers in the backblocks were very bemused with potato peelers and had no idea what to do with them.

I think it is a marvellous idea and much better than a straight hand-out.

Some people have most of they need and gifts become more or less tokens of goodwill and/or love. So for those sorts of people I think this is ideal. And because they are into goats I think they will enjoy choosing a project although there are dozens of others as well.

great generous gifts. I do like gift tokens as I can then buy goods I like for myself. Terrific that you are all supporting such important projects too

@JudyEv the only disadvantage is that they tell people how much you spent on them

@arthurchappell There is that aspect of it. I'm pretty good at finding bargains as gifts which seems mean but I always make sure it is something the person will like.

Those gift cards are a wonderful idea, to help someone get started in their business. Those goats are precious, I love goats! My daughter's neighbor has three goats and they are so sweet:)

@kobesbuddy My nephew's prize Saanens give too much milk for one household but the little Nigerian dwarfs give enough milk for a household.

@JudyEv My friend Michelle couldn't drink cows milk. Her father bought a female goat, that had given birth. Thus, Michelle had an inexhaustible source of goats milk to drink:)

This is a great organization and one we have been involved with since our e-How days. Did you write for them also?

It seems there are a few Kiva members here which is nice. No, I didn't write for e-How. I did write for Helium, Infobarrel and Bubblews.

I think it is a wonderful scheme - so much better than just giving money. Giving money is fine but people can only give so much as with a loan it gets repaid and you can help someone else without always outlaying more money.
