When I think of Santa I think of the older St. Nicolas looking one. There are many interesting facts about Santa and here are just four:
* There is actually a mountain in Kyrgyzstan named after Santa. On Christmas Eve in 2007 one of Kyrgyzstan's mountains was named after Santa Claus. The Swedish Logistics Company suggested this to both promote its tourism industry and to give Santa the opportunity to distribute gifts around the world.
* The department store Santa, popularized by Coca Cola, has been a tradition for 122 years. It is a great marketing tool along with heavy holiday decorations in stores and malls. It was introduced by James Edgar, a businessman, in 1890. He played Santa for his employees in his department store in Brockton, Massachusetts.
*During the 17th century there was a great debate among Americans and Englishmen about the belief in the legends of Santa Claus. In 1810 the first portrait of St. Nicolas was produced in America by The New York Historical Society. Of course, what was to become the gospel of Santa's visit, Reverend Clement Moore and Washington Irving presented their creation of 'A Visit from St. Nicholas' in 1823.
* Santa is believed to exist by many, although some say if he did exist he is probably dead by now. But, what if he is supernatural which he would almost have to be? And he would have to travel at a speed of 650 miles PER second, and deliver 830 presents per second. But, still the little ones believe. His sleigh would have to weigh about 400,000 tons, and he would need over 360,000 reindeer to pull that load.

From what my Mom has said, St. Nicolas Day meant almost more to her and her brother than Christmas, when they were children. They'd put stockings out on their bed posts and the next morning there would be an orange in the stocking's toe and candy, too, I think.

I'm not a religious person. I believe in the family part of the holiday.

The history of the religious aspects of Christmas is an interesting study. The Church (the Catholic Church was the only church at that time) did not start to celebrate Jesus birth until about 384 A.D. When the church did, it wasn't because Jesus was actually born on 25 December, or even in December, it was because they were losing recent converts who, depending on which belief system they'd converted from, either went back to celebrating Yule, the Winter Solstice, or the Roman Festival of Lights followed by Saturnalia.
For many years prior to the mid 19th century many Protestant denominations outlawed the celebration of Christmas. The only brought it back into their churches when they started losing congregants to the Catholic churches who still celebrated the Christ Mass.

Since Jesus was not born in December and the church only started celebrating 25 December as his "birthday" in 384 A.D., or thereabouts in order to appease recent converts who celebrated pagan festivals of the Winter Solstice, and considering that for a very long time Protestant churches outlawed the celebration of Christmas, is it any wonder that modern Christmas, really only celebrated since the late 1800s in the wake of Clement Moore's poem and Thomas Nast's illustrations, is more about Santa than Jesus?
