This pub was built on the site of a former inn, The White Lion, in 1898. The name pays tribute to the brave local men who signed up to the army voluntarily (rather than under draft conscription) as a defence force at the height of fears that Napoleon might try to invade Britain. The sign has a perfect symmetry, with the proud immaculately dressed soldier placed between the flag and a discreet poppy at the bottom among the laurel laves reminding us of those who fell in the fighting of the Napoleonic and later conflicts.
