THE CARAVAN of MIGRANTS: Should the USA Welcome Them or Not?

During our lunch break at work yesterday, I started a friendly discussion with three of my co-workers re the Caravan of Migrants from South America. I asked what they think the USA should do to them – to welcome them or not. One responded : “The Trump administration should welcome them. These are poor people and they need jobs to support their families.” The second said : “Hell, no! If USA should welcome them; surely, more caravans of migrants will be heading to the USA!” The third one blurted : “I would suggest that leaders from all South American countries and the USA should come together ASAP to form a union of Americas excluding Canada, just like the European Union.” I asked him why Canada should be excluded. He replied - It is because Canada is an extension of the United Kingdom and Canada would surely do a Canexit like Brexit. LOL Anyway, what should the USA do to these migrants from South America? I agree. I have relatives (American citizens) in the USA. Some of them could not find a decent job because of these illegal immigrants.

@myklj999 when I was a student (ya, back in the stone ages) we picked fruit in the summer to earn some money. Strawberries, cherries, peaches, apples, pears.....you name it, we picked it. It was piece work and if we worked our butts off we could actually earn around $100 a week. Now all these jobs are taken by migrant workers (legal) because the farmers could not find local people willing to do the work.

As the USA have not problems enough, what a terrible idea to make a Union. Europe is already tired to be united.

@antonbunot USA will have "immigrants" anyway. In Europe Germany has immigrants from Greece, even if they are both part of the United Europe. Where is the difference? The poor try to go to work in wealthier countries and they end up to spend more to eat, lodging, clothing and everything, so they finally realize they had better stayed in their own country.

@LadtDuck LOL . . . that is not my idea. It is a co-worker's idea. Anyway, according to him since Mexico and the USA could not find a way to stop migration; a union would be a good idea.

What we should do is now a moot point. Agents of the Trump administration have already begun firing on the migrants with tear gas to drive them away from the border and Trump has authorized the used of deadly force by Border Patrol Agents and members of the military against the migrants to keep them from crossing.

@antonbunot Having followed Trump's career since he was a racist landlord in the 1970s, I feel certain that Trump took pleasure at watching those Latinx people getting gassed. Even his comments since then show he has no compassion for them. Trump deliberately created this situation and blew it out of proportion for nefarious reasons most people won't believe until it comes to light.

So, should they be allowed to cross the border and allowed to find works or not.

@DWDavis well they tried to forced themselves in. I am sure border patrols did it as a last resort. I don’t think trump is happy seeing these people gassed. He is following the law. Unless Americans want an open border, then let all people who need works freely enter your country.america is known as land of American dream.

Canada is an extension of the United Kingdom? OK - it's a member of the Commonwealth and used to be part of the British Empire, but I don't think that many Canadians would be happy with that description!

You are right . . . Lots of Canadians are not happy. Canadians still give allegiance to the queen. We have a so called-Lt. Governor representing the queen. I don't mind being associated with the UK. In fact, I wish Canada is a province of the UK.by the way, it was not me who said that Canada is an extension of the UK. Anyway, the main point of my post is the migrants trying to enter the USA illegally. Should they be allowed or not.

Why should the USA welcome them? Lots of Americans could no longer find decent jobs because of illegal immigrants.

@antonbunot I understand this. But those immigrants need a job. They need to live.

We should keep them out. Period. We have laws in this country and we have ways to enter legally. We cannot afford to have anyone here who wants to be here. We cannot be a country if we have open borders anymore than we can have a happy home with open doors. We lock our doors at night for a reason. If you can't sleep at night knowing anyone can come into your home for any reason, use your facilities, eat your food, sleep in your bed, sit on your couch, or whatever else...no sane person can sleep at night knowing just anyone will come into your country.

I'm all for legal immigrants. After all, my grandparents came here legally and created jobs for many.

Nope. Better not. This is already happening in Germany and one of the problems that brought this immigrants was that women are no longer secure from the men who came from the countries where women are not respected.
