Dictionary photos and my friend Oscar

I suppose a lot of us still have dictionaries around the house, though you can now access a number of good ones online. But, back before the internet (yes, some of us were alive then) many people kept this rather large book around to look up meanings of words and to check spelling. Oscar, my ping pong and photography friend, brought a dictionary to ping pong on Monday. This was a 1992 American Heritage Dictionary. Unlike the page I photographed here, the little pictures next to the words were in black and white. Back then, dictionary publishers bought photos for the words from stock photo companies. Oscar submitted many photos to the stock photo people and the dictionary publishers bought some to use. In this dictionary, there are 59 photos that Oscar took. Next to the entry for "aviator sunglasses" is a photo of a man wearing a pair and that is Oscar. Maybe his wife took the photo. I never thought about where those photos in dictionaries came from. Maybe they still buy them that same way.

That is so cool! Don't laugh, but we still have many dictionaries and use them at times. I will be sure to look up Oscar's photo

Nothing wrong with keeping any books around.

I have a child's dictionary that has pictures, but I don't think any of my other ones have them.

I really never noticed the photos when I looked at dictionaries, but most of them seem to have some.

Good going, Oscar. Now I'm lonesome for my 50's dictionary. I love the thin paper in those dictionaries. Kind of like the old bible paper.

@JamesHxstatic For sure. Like anything fine, you are expected to care for it.

I never thought about that paper, but recall that pages like that tore easily.

@JamesHxstatic - That is really cool. I think it would be fun to have your photo in a dictionary. i never thought about where those pictures come from, either!

I'm guilty of using the Internet to look words up. I haven't owned a dictionary in years.

Wow, that would be something to brag about - or at least to try to slip into conversations. Congratulations to your friend.
