I run a cleaning business which means we do more than clean windows. How it all began. (This will have several parts)

I've talked a lot about the business I've been running for the last ten years. While most of our work is cleaning windows that's not all we do or have done before. My husband used to run the business or at least he thought he did. He worked it every day and took the crew out with him. I think he did the hiring in the early days alone. No!I made the appointments, I did all the bookkeeping and paid the bills and did payroll. When he began the business he wanted to do mainly carpets but we couldn't afford the truck with the water on board and while waiting for carpet customers he washed windows on the side. Eventually a person from church was changing jobs or leaving the area so he gave my husband his customers and that's how he began. During those first years we got a contract to clean fashion bug stores in lower Michigan and he and a small crew would travel several hours to strip and wax tile floors and clean carpets. They had to do the work in the night when the stores were closed. Other than having a crew to do that work I don't think anyone helped him with windows the first five years or so. My kids were young then so I wasn't as involved either and everything was done on ledgers. That was before we had a computer in every room

Sounds like the start of a very profitable business. I think businesses that offer services that are so needed by others do the best.

We learned a lot through the years. Years later I even went door to door to try to get new customers. And that helped a lot. We've had over 300 semi-regular customers through the years.

I like services as your business because they don’t require much capital. You can do it anytime you want.

It does take a bit of cash to begin as one needs towels, squeegees and mops to clean the windows. When doing the stores we needed to be able to rent tile machines and carpet cleaners plus the chemicals or products used to clean stuff. But we never took out any loans for that.

Eventually you need to get insurance too but maybe not in the beginning if those doing the work have some type of training.

It has its ups and downs just like anything else. We've been in business since the early nineties although we gained more customers the longer we did it and mostly by word of mouth

@arthurchappell I'm sure we don't have that many customers still but sometimes after years of not having us people will call again. And we get new customers each year too. Just in the last two months we gained four new people. How often they have us come remains to be seen

Being self employed is interesting, but we always have ups and downs. I hope you liked your job in a whole.

All my bookkeeping is done on my computer. I have to save copies of needed things just in case I'm ever audited, but otherwise the rest gets put into the shred pile.
