Shoe Experiment

A very expensive, designer shoe store opened up in Los Angeles recently. They did it on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, which is the part of the LA which is often shown in movies. The shoes sold for $500 - $1000 a pair or higher. A large number of very sophisticated people and "social media influencers" purchased the shoes. The praised the shoes for their quality and styling.
Then, they buyers were all told that all the shoes had actually come from PayLess, a discount shoe store, and they were worth less than $50 a pair. The fake store was named Palessi, a play on the word Payless.
The buyers were refunded their purchase price and were allowed to keep the shoes. They were also let in on the joke and all of them were very surprised that they had been so easily fooled into thinking they were buying expensive designer shoes.
PayLess said it was a social experiment to see if people really would pay an excessively high price for a pair of discount shoes. They did.
One of our daughters used to be a shoe buyer for a very high class department store. She handled shoes like Channel, Prada, Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin, Farragamo, Gucci, Manolo Blahnik and others. I can't wait to ask her what she thinks about this experiment!

I love so much when someone takes the time to show how much stupid are those who pretend to "know" the difference from a normal shoe and a high class shoe. I have a pair of Ferragamo, well the quality of the leather is different, but you only know if you bought the original thing from their unique store in Italy.2 people like this

@LadyDuck - Yes, I loved this experiment. It was amazing how easily all those people were fooled ... and these were people who were willing and able to spend hundreds of dollars on a pair of shoes. I wonder if they will look differently at the next pair of expensive shoes they buy and wonder if it is really worth the money.

@LadyDuck - The poor French. I guess no one likes to be replaced by "newer models." LOL

@LadyDuck I agree! I happen to appreciate French food, but would not eat it exclusively, and I have friends who do not like most French food at all. To me, I love to eat a variety of foods from all over the world, and I have found there are wonderful things to enjoy from many places.

@DeborahDiane i think you'd have to be in the profession to be able to really see and feel the difference.

@hereandthere - Since they refunded the money to the customers and let them keep the shoes, I don't think they were angry. I think they were surprised and embarrassed. Mostly, the ones they interviewed on TV seemed shocked. It was a good lesson for them!

@sofssu - Yes, that is really true. It makes you wonder if things are really worth what we pay for them. I think we overpay for things more often than we realize!

@sofssu - I agree. Many expensive goods are no better than the cheaper ones. I read once that eyeglass frames are all made by one or two companies. Some are labeled Channel and some are off-brand, but they are all made by the same company and the price can vary by hundreds of dollars.

@JudyEv - I thought it was a fun idea. It was interesting to hear the comments of the customers when they thought the shoes were actually designer shoes. They talked about how lovely the shoes were, the impressive styling, the great workmanship. When they found out the shoes were from Payless, the customers were shocked. It was funny!

@DeborahDiane It would be very funny. They'd all be feeling so chuffed to have such shoes. Talk about egg on face!

@JudyEv - Since these "influencers" were allowed to keep the shoes, I wonder if they actually wear them! That would be an interesting follow-up study! LOL

@snowy22315 - Yes, people pay way too much for labels, and this was a good experiment to show that.

If you give it a fancy story people will spend to say they have it.

@wolfgirl569 - Yes, you are right. You can convince people to spend a ridiculous amount of money on things. It was an interesting and thought-provoking experiment.

Yes, it was a pretty funny experiment. I am glad that Payless did it. I'm sure those people will think twice before paying a lot of money for shoes next time.

@Janet357 - Yes, there are a lot of brand conscious people and it is worth it for some of them to realize how foolish that can be.
