Safely back home after a visit to Bourne in Lincolnshire. This was one trip I could not put off as it was my mother's 80 birthday.
A good time was had by all and I was able to get some time to walk around Bourne. Considering it is a small farming town it has quite the history and no one will not be able to escape it, now that I am writing again!
I was loaded down with goodies for the big day, so I didn't bring my folding bike with me. That was a pity as I it would have come in handy once I found out the history that lay outside the town. Still, next time!
Being quite fascinated by watermills I found that not only does Bourne have one, serving as the local museum, but it works... mostly.
Instead of the original 24 foot wheel, along with five others, it now has one about six feet across. Not used for grinding corn anymore, this one generates electricity for the museum, but on the day I visited they were running off the mains.
Also Bourne had a castle, sadly nothing remains but a ditch which was probably the former moat, fed from the river that powers the mill, and that did not show up on a photograph. It is said that stones from the castle arrow slits were used in the construction of a barn, but no one can be sure of that.
