Pub Sign Study The Alma Inn Bolton Lancashire

A colourful dramatic sign depicting the Battle Of The Alma River, from a Crimean conflict where Britain, France Turkey scored an important military victory over Russia in 1854 after being repelled twice. The third strike broke through the enemy lines. The French were particularly commended for scaling cliffs regarded as an impenetrable natural defense.
There were nearly 9,000 casualties, more than half of them Russian.
British pubs, streets and girls born in the next few decades were named Alma in celebration of the costly win.
The sign captures the violence and desperation of the close-quartered combat with a horse and rider surrounded on all sides by sword bearing infantry and cavalry riders.
Many men from Bolton undoubtedly took part in the conflict.

@LadyDuck it would terrify me - I would never sign up to fight voluntarily

@arthurchappell I can imagine how those very young soldiers were scared. I think that nobody likes the idea to die.

@Fleura yes, the combat would leave the uniforms covered in mud, blood and dust

@Fleura That is a good idea though if it was my blood I'd be aware of it anyway

@arthurchappell That's why they were originally blood red, apparently - so that the men would not be disheartened when they saw the amount of blood lost.
